Is going to be on tv sunday I think... Halle Berry is playing Janey. I know this is about tv, but really it's about one of my favorite books, so I think it belongs here.

I just saw "Everybody's Ruby", which is a play about Zora Hurston. I haven't read this particular book, but she was such an interesting person, I'll look for it.

Was the play about her life? I went to a library discussion on her life. She was a funny person. Did they show how when she worked for this woman she would lay in bed at her employers house and let the maid wait on her? And she would have rent parties. I wish I could have met Zora.... A lot of her writings were lost and she was incredibly brilliant... if only she could have devoted herself more to writing...

Zora Neale Hurston is one of my FAVORITE writers. I was introduced to her in an AP lit class I took in HS and am so glad I was- I never would have known about her otherwise. I love that Alice Walker went and "found" her and gave her a proper tombstone. I went and bought an athology of all her work. It is really sad that there are still artists out there whose works are not truly appreciated until after they are gone.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up- I will tape it!

The play is sort of biographical. It's a pretty neat production, and I was really intrigued by what I learned about her. She does have a fair number of books, though. Have you read the anthropological stuff that she did? They're very accessible, even to those of us who don't have a real background in anthropology. Our public library has several of her works.

This is the only book I've read of hers but I'd like to read everything she's ever written when I have time. If anyone finds out the time or the channel, post it here. I was hoping the movie would be a major motion picture... it doesn't seem like a made for tv movie will do it justice, but then again, when does Halle Berry ever do made for tv movies.

Wasn't Halle Berry in "Queen"? (sequel... well, not sequel exactly, but follow-up to "Roots") That was made for TV. But that was a looooong time ago. Maybe it wasn't her...

ETA - I looked it up, and it was her (1993) so there you go she has done made-for-tv ...but it was before she'd had any movie roles.

She was also in The Wedding (an Oprah production), and that was in '98...AFTER she'd done big time movies.

Of course the book was so much more captivating... I think our brains do a better job at characterization, but it was still neat to see it on the screen.... and sort of root for your favorite lines, ya know??? My favorite part was when they got to the muck.... it was like Shakedown Street or something... that part was cool. It will probably come out on dvd... it probably has already I would think.
