NIP Philadelphia Auto Show

I went to "The Show" yesterday with DH, SH, Dad and his GF and her DD, and Brother and his GF. We had a good time, although the show itself was disappointing this year.

Anyway, I wore Jett in the Baba Sling and nursed on the go. He nursed three times while we there and it was easy. I noticed that several people noticed what he was doing, as everyone was always trying to peep at "the baby in the weird holder." But, to my surprise and disappointment and relief, nobody said anything. Nothing positive, . But nothing negative, .

I did almost get in trouble for changing him on the floor outside the restrooms. The security guards were yakking about me, literally behind my back, saying that was indecent and wrong and I should use the changing station. So, the other says, "Yeah, you know there's one in there. What's her problem? I'll show her that she has to use it." So, she goes in the bathroom, comes back out and says to the other first guard, "Actually, there's nothing in there. She should go find another bathroom." But, they never apparently had the nerve to confront me. Out of five bathrooms I entered in the Convention Center, only one had a changing station. That's sad. I got in a conversation on the matter with a man and his wife who had a son, maybe 10 yo, in a wheelchair. They found the place very inhospitable to their needs, as well. That just sucks.

Anyway, I've nursed in a lot of restaurants so far, but this was my first NIP, walking around and mingling...quite pleasant, simple and straightforward, I thought.

Just had to share.

I thought you were going to say you were asked to leave...the city actually has laws on the books protecting b/fing (unlike the state of PA). Glad you had fun at the show! I'm dying to take DS to the flower show in April...

Where else did they expect you to change your baby's diaper? On the hood of a model car?

Kristin, I knew about the laws in the city, and was prepared to cite them should I have any problems. Nobody even mentioned it.

Though, amusingly, I did get some stares and smiles from men from teens through elderly. I've always gotten a LOT of male attention, but that kind is new and pleasant. They look at me as though they fondly remember something, despite many of them probably being bottle babies. Guys seems so much cooler about breastfeeding. Don't even get me started on my dad and my 18 and 19 year old brothers. They are just awesome!! (Now, if I can just get the point across about the ills of circ to them, we've have the crunchiest teen boys in the area!)

Glad you didn't have any negitive comments! It's too bad the facility was so unaccomidating. I hope you are able to make a comment to those who planned it to make it more family/disabled friendly in the future.

I recently went to a sportsman's show (DH is an avid hunter/fisherman) and wore my baby and nursed her wherever we wanted. I also didn't get any negitive stares or comments, but I live in Washington State so I would have been very shocked if somebody did say something negitive about me breastfeeding. Of course most people probably thought DD was sleeping. I've never had anyone say anything negitive to me about NIP, and I've only had one "look," and I NIP everywhere.
