I liked this quote:
Quote:
14. Mother and infant should sleep in proximity to each other to facilitate breastfeeding.203
Just come out and say it's okay to co-sleep!

Quote:
1. Pediatricians and other health care professionals should recommend human milk for all infants in whom breastfeeding is not specifically contraindicated and provide parents with complete, current information on the benefits and techniques of breastfeeding to ensure that their feeding decision is a fully informed one.
I really wish this would happen...

Quote:
2. Education of both parents before and after delivery of the infant is an essential component of successful breastfeeding.
This is a VERY good one. Not just the mother should be educated but her support system as well.

Quote:
3. Healthy infants should be placed and remain in direct skin-to-skin contact with their mothers immediately after delivery until the first feeding is accomplished.
Not in my local hospital. **sigh**

Quote:
10. There is no upper limit to the duration of breastfeeding and no evidence of psychologic or developmental harm from breastfeeding into the third year of life or longer.

11 and 12 just baffle me....

Quote:
Should hospitalization of the breastfeeding mother or infant be necessary, every effort should be made to maintain breastfeeding, preferably directly, or pumping the breasts and feeding expressed milk if necessary.
Someone should tell this to the doctors at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital.
Not only would they not let me BF DS (I should have anyway), they even tried to convinve me to stop pumping.

Breastfeeding is not contraindicated for infants born to mothers who are hepatitis B surface antigen–positive
This is exactly the info I need for the mama I met at Bible Study who was told she could NOT BF b/c she is a Hep B carrier.

Thanks for the great link!

11 & 12 are just ways for Peds to try to make money off of BFing mommas.

You know something, with wanting to lower health care costs in the USA, you'd think #12 would read..."Take your baby outside on sunny days, to provide a natural FREE source of Vit. D"....

Other than those last two, I was really, really amazed and enthralled. Really impressed.

I want this on a toddler T-shirt!

Still don't understand the HIV recommendations, but oh well.

"Healthy infants should be placed and remain in direct skin-to-skin contact with their mothers immediately after delivery until the first feeding is accomplished. The alert, healthy newborn infant is capable of latching on to a breast without specific assistance within the first hour after birth. Dry the infant, assign Apgar scores, and perform the initial physical assessment while the infant is with the mother. The mother is an optimal heat source for the infant. Delay weighing, measuring, bathing, needle-sticks, and eye prophylaxis until after the first feeding is completed. Infants affected by maternal medications may require assistance for effective latch-on.Except under unusual circumstances, the newborn infant should remain with the mother throughout the recovery period."
Thank goodness they've finally realized this. WHy do they think it's a better idea to warm a baby naked on a table under a heat lamp?! They don't even do that to fast-food hamburgers anymore. I'll step down now. Maybe I can give this to all the people that say negative things to me.

I want this on a T-shirt!! More artistically done than I can do it.

I'd much rather it say that there is proven BENEFIT rather than just agreeing that a child breastfed beyond 3 isn't being HARMED.

Yes, that's a good point. Now that you mention it, I'd like it if they would say that all mothers should do child-led-weaning.

But I guess there are small steps to get to that point. Isn't it something like 35% of mothers who don't even try to bf at all?
That is a good point, but since most of us who catch flack get statements about the harm we are causing, a statement from the AAP flat out refuting that assumption is just what's needed as well. Now that you mention it, I wish they'd gone the next step and stated that nursing to whatever age is beneficial, but small steps are better than no steps in the correct direction.

I was of course prescribed the vita-drops for dd. when we went to her 6 week, the ped asked...are you giving her the vitamins. i said nope. he said, ok....can i ask why not. i explained that they had cherry flavor and caramel color, and i thought that was ridiculous. he said...the recommendation was made primarily because DARK SKINNED INFANTS, INFANTS IN VERY COLD CLIMATES, and INFANTS WHO WORE CULTURAL CLOTHING THAT COVERED THEIR BODIES were showing deficiencies. blanket recommendation....not a blanket problem. sheesh.

Hah. Saw the new info on kellymom and went to post here... I should have known it would be here already! With 18 comments no less :LOL

So what is the deal with vitamin D now? Anyone have some cold hard facts on NOT having to do this crap that I can print out and bring to my ped visit?
