My last child ( #3) was delivered at home. I had planned to have a homebirth about three months before my due date. I had delivered my last baby at the birthing center and felt so comfortble with my midwife that I really wanted to do this one at home.
I had experienced some mild Braxton Hicks but nothing painful. So when my due date approached, I insisted that my midwife check me so I could see if the Braxton Hicks were doing anything at all. I was really crossing my fingers that I would have dialated a couple of centimeters. I was quite shocked when I was told that I was at five already! Five! Already! My midwife sent me on my way and I was quite happy to go about my business. I went shopping. Carried my one year old everywhere. Went on long walks. Everyone thought I should be laying flat on my back in the hospital waiting for labor to begin. Why? I would always ask.
So after a week, my midwife said that I would have to go to the hospital if labor didn't start soon. Legally she couldn't wait much longer. She suggested that I take castor oil. My mother, both my granmothers and great granmother took castor oil so I was confident that it was the way to go. I took it at about 7:00 that everning. Nothing happened for a few hours. My husband and I watched a movie and ate dinner. I thought well this stinks. I downed this totally gross thick liquid and still no baby. I ate my last bite. Headed to the bathroom and had my first real contraction. It felt like I was thrown into transition. I was shaking and not getting much rest in between contractions. I was moaning so loud my neighbors started praying for me. My husband called the midwife and she was there in fifteen minutes. After pacing all over the house for a comfy spot to have the baby, I gave birth on top of my husband. I had my third boy. He weighed 8lbs 14 oz. Born in the bag. From the first contractions to when he was fully out was 35 minutes. It was crazy! I so enjoyed having a homebirth!
