Where to go for Girl Scouts? Alternatives to Cub scouts? - Page 2

Since this thread got bumped back up, I thought I'd share...

A local homeschooler who works odd hours discovered that the Boy Scouts have a program called the Lone Scouts for homeschoolers and other boys who don't have access to a local troop. I think she found something similar for Girl Scouts, but she only has boys, so didn't pursue that.

When I was in Girl Scouts the groups were divided by church, not school. I was thinking of letting dd join next year if I could opt her out of the "health" part and the selling stuff part (when I was in GS I was the only girl whose parents wouldn't let her sell cookies--they thought it was child exploitation, and today I agree with them).

I did not know that about the Boy Scouts discriminating against the UU church. I didn't have any objection to the Boy Scouts' stances because I thought they were non-sectarian but just believing in a "higher power." But actually discriminating against a specific religious group is another matter. I'm glad I know that now, so I can scratch them off my (ever-shrinking) "groups I agree with" list.

4-H has a clover bud program for kids 5-8. You would have to contact your local extension office to see if they have any programs by you.If not you can always start your on clover bud or daisy troop!

Depending on your state's program offerings, you can be a full 4-H member from 9 through 19 years of age. Most states also have a program (often called"Cloverbuds" or "Primaries") for youth ages 5 through 9. Check out your state's website for information specific to your area.

I'm a daisy girl scout leader and have found the organization easy to work with. I think there is a "juliette" program that is for a girl without a troop. I do know that the leader's guide notes that the word god means different things to everybody and that it is not the leaders' job to teach religion.
