My DS#2 was born at home on June 25th, 2004, but I haven't called Vital Statistics to report it yet! I was planning on calling today, but I'm worried that I might get in trouble for waiting so long!! : Should I be worried??

Was it unassisted? If yes, I personally wouldn't worry about it, I would go down to the town hall in your town and get all the paperwork filled out, shrug your shoulders and move on.
Here in CT we are to report the birth w/in 10 days of it happening. We finally got around to the certificate and registration about 3 months afterwards. Of course the clerk gave me an attitude over it, so I said- "if I don't get this in w/in 10 days, the state won't give me a birth certificate?" She had nothing more to say on that.
Our form clearly stated that the information provided is for statistical data only- the only really important info is for the birth certif. I don't think there is a major press for time with the statistics.(jmho)
Check out your town's/state website for info.
If it was assisted by a midwife, I thought that was something they did for you. If not, perhaps a call to them as to what you need to do.

I don't think it is a serious as not filing your taxes- but I know how you feel. I was sweating it a bit myself. :LOL

Hi Amy. Thanks for responding! It was assisted by a midwife, but since she is unlicensed, she wanted me to report it and state that it was assisted/attended by my husband (to avoid legal problems). My husband was there and assisting so it wouldn't be a lie.

She gave me a number to call. I do remember her telling me that they require you to report it within a certain period of time, but that it really doesn't matter. I think she said that as long as I do it within a year, it should be okay.

And just so I get this straight, the birth certficate is seperate right? And do I need to report it before I can get his birth certificate?

i think it depends on your state. i did all my forms at once, including the ss#

this may help-

also check our your own town hall for specifics

good luck to you

I'd just go fill out the form

Just fill out the paperwork and request your birth certificates. It's just paperwork, and most of those offices don't think twice about it.

Do it asap. I know that here in HI, it gets harder to do after 6 months.

It's just paperwork anyways. You also might want to call before you go to see what they need. some states require a proof of pregnancy, something from a doctor who has seen the baby.... any number of things. better to walk in prepared!

Thanks, ladies! I found a website with a number to call to register a birth and can you believe that they mention homebirths?!?! I was surprised because this is just a general website for Orange County!! Here it is http://www.ochealthinfo.com/public/b...er%20a%20Birth They even mentioned homebirths when I called the number (it was a recording). They said that to register a homebirth I need to go down to their office to fill out a form and I need to bring with me: someone who witnessed the birth, proof of address and a copy of my baby's PKU test (the test that I regretted doing because after a nice, cozy homebirth, my baby was crying/screaming in pain from being pricked in the foot. I felt horrible, but I guess it's good that I had it done because it looks like I need it....although I'm sure I could have just given them proof of a general baby exam. I'd hate to think that I'd have to put my next baby through that).

On Monday, I'm gonna go and apply for a copy of his PKU test and after I receive it, I'll make an appointment to go and register the birth. Here in Orange County, CA we have a year to report the birth. If you wait until your child is one or older, you have to go to court to register his/her birth. Thank God tax day is forcing me to do this now, LOL!
