I just got Circle Round a few weeks ago, and was surprised at how good it was, so full of info and ideas. We used it yesterday in a nice Oester celebration, it was so nice out and the flrs are blooming, so we celebrated the Goddess again, even tho it was not vernal equinox.
2 more books I have been enjoying lately:
When God Was a Woman, by Merlin Stone. Written in 1976, but still relevant. "The landmark exploration of the ancient worship of the Great Goddess and the eventual suppression of women's rites." It shows how Goddess worship was hated and attacked by the priestly writers of the Jewish scriptures, even to the point of ironically calling it worship of Ba'al, not Ashtoreth!
The Historical Mary, by Michael Jordan (!). The author assumes Mary (Jesus' mother) was an historical person, whose persona was mythologized, and made into a representation of the Great Goddess by the Catholic priests, prophets and popes. For my taste, he puts too much emphasis on her virginity, and leaves out a discussion of her sister/other half, Mary of Magdala. Still a good read, with lots of history.
