Where to buy birth supplies?

I have one site that the midwives recommended and another someone else recommended, but with both you have to call to order. I know I sound somewhat ridiculous, but is there a place that anyone can recommend that I could just order from online?

Thanks!

Try Birthsupplies.com, formerly SLC Birth Supplies

It's run by Shonda Parker (well known in midwifery circles for publications). The site is somewhat new, so call her if you have any problems or don't see something you want.

My midwife had a kit that I ordered for $50, but the kit is listed under her name and n)ot on-line yet (her name is Tracey Johnstone, if you want to see what a typical kit is). It has a little too much stuff, IMO, but the prices per item were so low that it made sense to go with the whole thing.

Here is what was in the kit:

1 Paper sheet, plastic backed $1
1 Birth Certificate 1.50
25 Large underpads (@crib size) 0.35
12 sanitary napkins 2.00
4 pair vinyl gloves 1.00
16 oz alcohol 1.35
witch hazel 2.00
Perineum massage oil 8.00
Peri bottle 0.70
12 gauze sponge 2 pack 0.25
1 bulb syringe 1.95
2 baby hats 1.50
1 mesh pant 1.75
6 lube jelly packets 0.06
1 economy digital thermometer 4.00
2 plastic cord clamps 1.50
1 footprinter 1.25

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for all the sites. I have a list of supplies that I need, but the quantities are way off for what's listed in a birth kit. My list will say I need a gazillion of something and there's only a few of those in a birth kit. Then the kit comes with a bunch of things not listed. I have an appt. tomorrow with the midwife and will ask to be sure. I like the idea of buying a "kit", but hey...we'll get whatever they suggest.

Thanks again,
Chrys

It really depends on what the midwife brings with her, but I never needed half of the things most birth kits contain.

I simply stopped at the pharmacy to pick up some alcohol & chux pads, got the herbs I needed from the local natural food store. There is really very little that is truly neccesary to give birth.

I agree with Annethcz...

I have a full dozen chux pads left over after my last birth. The alcohol, witch hazel, etc all were over kill. We needed a cord clamp, the birth cert was a nice token but unnecessary.

Mostly, we used a lot of towels, a $1 shower curtain to protect the bed and a bowl for the placenta!

Still, if you have a midwife in attendance, I think it is respectful to them to have the things on hand that make them more secure with the birth. They've agreed to assist where necessary, and I felt like I needed to have whatever supplies she suggested out of respect for her. It wasn't expensive and it was fun to feel "ready."

Have fun buying supplies and daydreaming of your birth, but don't stress about it!
