I'm Rh - my husband is pos. we are trying to find out what we can do to make sure that I get a shot if the baby is positive. What have you done?
Thanks for the help, this is our first together, and our first homebirth!

Hi there. I had my son at home and am Rh negative. The midwives took cord blood and tested DS. They also had a supply of Rhogam to give me but turned out I went into the hospital after the birth (for stitches) and from what I remember they gave me the shot there. So, ask your midwives, maybe they can do it for you. i think you have 24 hrs?

One thing I would say though is find out how/when they get the cord blood. Turned out my mw's cut the cord almost imediately after DS was born(leading to a whole load of complications), and the only reason I can think they did that was to get the cord blood. Other midwives have told me they use a syringe to get the blood, or take it from the placenta.

My midwife tested cord blood, but she waited for it to stop pulsing before cutting (she also got my permission first). She came back at 2 days to give me the rhogam shot. I believe you have 72 hours to do the shot.

If you're having an unassisted birth I don't know what you do!

My midwife said 48 hours. I'm going to get a shot w/in 48 hours of the birth if there is excessive bleeding, trauma, etc. From what I understand, there's no HUGE hurry and there's no reason to have one unless one or both of you bleed heavily.

My m/w (who got here 15 mins. after the birth) waited until the cord had stopped pulsing and placenta was delivered to take blood with a syringe from the cord... babe is AB+ like daddy (I'm O-) and she gave us a scrip to have filled for the rhogam, which she was going to come and administer at the 3-day check-up, but we decided against it, since we don't plan on having any more children, and as this would be my first possible sensitization anyway, and birth and stage 3 were completely trauma free and physiological, even if I were to get pregnant again, chances are very slim that there would be any risks. There simply was no reason to believe that any sensitization would have occured.

I can also always go get a blood test, if I need to know for certain. I didn't want to risk the shot and all its nasty ingredients while breastfeeding.

rh help

Thanks for the advice. Our mw says she can't get a script, or take the blood to a lab. She is a lay mw and our state has laws that don't allow them to practice. So we are reporting it as a UC. But we do appreciate your help
Thanks
