More Thoughts on Homeschooling

by Margaret Boyce

You might remember a thread a while ago about a baseless diatribe she wrote against homeschooling... well she's written another one. here's a quote:

Quote:
Many thanks to the multitudes of people who have called, written and spoken to me about this huge concern. Contact your representative in the legislature and see if better protection for children can be passed. Most states do monitor these families and also supervise the curriculum and test students periodically to be sure that they are not being totally cheated. Many of our Michigan politicians seem to be afraid of the homeschool network and dare not even discuss some modification that will speak for these youngsters.

Oh my goodness, what a sico! People like that are dangerous. : Who's been brainwashed?

Yeah, like more governmental control is going to help anything... I hope no one listens to her uneducated rant.

Is it just me .... it sounds like she's terrified of homeschoolers.

they can object to our standards and opportunities only if they hold the local school teachers to the same standards.

UGh!

I know... the woman is either REALLY dumb (she thinks all homeschoolers are "well orchestrated" because so many wrote her pissed off letters? this IS the internet... duh... and she still seems to think the founding fathers went to public school), REALLY scared of homeschooling, or just plain old psycho!

It is scary that someone like this could have influence... she "claims" that many wrote to her supporting her ideas.

The thing that scares me is this freak is from my perfect homeschooling state of Michigan! Her venom is frightening, not intimidating, but scary to think who and what she could influence

Gotta laught at someone *that* ignorant.

Namecalling really does not solve anything.

Simply continue to educate your children and beware of anyone who wants to do something to protect the children.

This is why I am very leery of CPS..."protect the children".

Sooo, then children are safe in public school? :
Tell that to the first grader who was attacked at knife point by a little second grade girl at my ds's former elementary school down the street from our house. Gee, yeah, I'd feel much better having my kids in an environment where bullying is an everyday occurance and stabbings and shootings are almost commonplace nowadays...

Yes, there are a few nutjobs who homeschool. There are also a few nutjobs who teach in schools and molest students. This lady needs to think about things a little more and do a LOT more research before she writes such garbage.

I really didn't like her comment about one boy missing the opportunity to be a "real star" in school.

If that's what she wants for her children, fine. I don't like someone trying to push that on me though, we have the freedom of choice in this country for many things and I am glad where our children go to school is one of them.

I wonder if she really believes that kids who are homeschooled are more likely to be abused than kids who go to public school? And I wonder where she got the idea?

PA is the second most difficult state to homeschool in, and they can't "monitor the curriculum" here, so I really wonder what states she's thinking of. Home visits? :LOL Do schools do home visits? Are parents encouraged to visit all schools, to make sure that their children are recieving an adequate education in a safe environment? If a parent (to say nothing of a nosy neighbor, relative, or friend) is concerned about what may be going on in school with a child, do they have any recourse to guarantee that child's safety? What if the principal of the school blows them off-- can they call the police and demand that action be taken?

Of course not, the omniscient schools know best for every single child. That's why it's estimated that fully 60% of gifted children in public school are unidentified, and why only 50% of the ones who are identified recieve any support. That's why we have kids graduating from high school functionally illiterate, and unable to do the most basic math. That's why kids are afraid to go to school, why children get beat up or worse during the day just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I think that she's someone who has a public school education who's just incredibly jealous of kids who have a chance to get a real education, without the dubious help of the public school system. How pathetic.

Now I don't mean in anyway to offend anyone form Michigan, but it doesn't surprise me in the least that that is where the woman is from. I have been in Michigan on and off (mostly on for the last few months) and holy cow is this place corrupt and wacked out!!! For those who may know what I am talking about, perhaps this woman is also driving a state paid for Lincoln Navigator!!! Seems to me that she has alterior motives.

Please remember that my intent is not to offend anyone on the MDC boards from MI. If you are on here in the first place, you are certainly a long ways off from the people I have come into contact with here.

BTW: I am in Sterling Heights, just north of Detroit, to give you a better idea of the people I have been around.

She got the idea from the Akron Beacon, or whatever "paper" did that series on the dangers of h/s. gah.

Ever notice lately that a lot of the abuse cases out there, reporters are saying the children where "homeschooled"? nevermind that the kids aren't being homeschooled at all, or that CPS knew about the familes in pretty much every case, or even that in a good number of them the kids were too young to be sent to school anyway.

Some people never let facts get in the way of their opinion.

Since a lot of abuse happnes in schools, maybe we can pass legislation to protect the kids there, monitor their teachers, check their backgrounds and hold them accountable.
Oh wait...

This woman definitely has an agenda. Why? She's employed in the school system. Just do a google search and confirm that for yourself!

That said home schooling isn't for everyone, and neither is public school.
Too many students are ill served by the public school system. You'd think she'd catch a clue about that.

Perhaps she is feeling a bit defensive about the inadequacies of the ps system? I have noticed that anyone working for a school system is THE WORST about this stuff.
