that random half an onion....

what do you store it in?

I used to store things like that (half an onion, tomatoe, a couple of pancakes) in small ziploc bags, saran wrap etc. Now I can't afford those things, plus I am trying to get away from plastic, so what do I store them in?

I have nothing right now so I have been wrapping them in damp birdseye flats that I use in the kitchen. I don't know how well things will keep. I would like to get something better. I was thinking the pyrex glass containers with the plastic lids, but for half an onion? Plus, 5 small containers here is $20, and I totally can't afford that..

I have things from Tupperware, that hang in my fridge special to hold them. Forget me Nots I think. they are the perfect size!

I use whatever random glass containers I can find.


I too cannot afford those, but I did succumb to some at the dollar stop--wax paper and aluminum foil and some plastic bags :

I've seen those ones from tupperware are they affordable? I like how they hang :LOL

Glass is actually the best thing to store onions in because it won't absorb the onion odor, and the onion odor won't infiltrate everything else in the fridge. As already mentioned, salsa jars are great- the short, wide-mouthed ones, or if you ever go to estate sales or yard sales you can often pick up wide-mouthed canning jars very cheaply.

We ahve reusable produce bags that we use for grocery shopping- farmers market and the like. I use those, btu they are just simple cloth bags.

I have those too, but they dont keep the moisture in an onion when in the fridge. I dont want to waste food.

Why don't you just put the whole onion in whatever you are making? Not being snarky, but that's what I would do.

Well, it is just me that likes onion. And well I don't make very big meals, plus lets say if I make a salad (one or two cups) I am not going to put a whole onion in it..

if it is too big and won't fit -- cut it up --- my dh tends to chop too much onion and then puts the chopped up stuff in the fridge.

My mom had a great glass container for an onion. It broke and we haven't found out where to get a new one!

I have a sad, shriveling, naked half an onion sitting in my fridge.

Okay, that was a bad example…

I’ve started leaving half used stuff out so I use it asp. I leave the odd strawberry, half banana, random lonely egg, slice of bread, opened avocado (you get the picture) all sitting on my counter on a beautiful carved wooden plate. It gives me a chance to have the plate out and the food is just staring at me all day just begging to be eaten.

Other wise it falls by the same fate as that sad onion in my fridge.

um, well, I scored tons of fugly harvest gold pyrex and corning ware from the thrift store for less that 25c.each. Do you guys have a good thrift shop up there?

you cant just buy tupperware from a site, you have to buy it from a party or a consultant
I have a co-worker that is an consultant, you can PM me for her website if you really want to check them out.

I love my Tupperware forget me nots, but yeah they're plastic

Actually you can buy it online through the tupperware website. I had just hoped at tupperware consultant would step up and answer this, LOL!

"Fugly." Man, I don't think I've heard that word since high school! Ah, the memories...

Any way, you could save the glass jars that other food comes in--mayo, pickles, jelly, PB, etc. Wash it really well, or run it through the dishwasher and VOILA! Instant leftover food storage containers!
