Growing up we did this a lot with neighbors who moved! We got some awesome stuff too. Black lights, toys, art supplies, fish tanks etc. It was pretty spiffy. Nowadays, not so much...you just dont know whats in their KWIM?
But sure loved it when we were little!

Tomorrow we are putting out an ice chest with sodas inside. There is a lot of construction where we live so I am sure one of the workers can find a use for it.

I put out a mattress that was REALLY old from DH's grandmother that was um...fragrant...with a warning sign not to take ...It was gone in 20 min :Puke

laughupa few years ago we put a small love seat at the end of our driveway -- it was in good shape with the exception of a small tear at the back.

My husband thought it was a crazy idea ~~ I don't think it was out there more than 20 minutes when 2 young fellows in a VW put it on the roof of their car -- with no string --- and they each stuck their arms out the window and held it down ... and off they drove ... we couldn't believe what we were seeing

We have often wondered if they made it to their destination without it falling off the roof LOL

Dang, I wish I could do this! The neighbors would never forgive us. They only way we could get away with it is if we had a proper yard sale.

Funny thing is -- almost everytime we have put something at the end of our driveway - its gone within 2 hours -- sometimes minutes!! .. perhaps you could do it while your neighbours are at work?? they might not even notice if your item(s) are taken quickly. If a neighbour asks -- just look puzzled and say "who put that there" !!! LOL

You've got to be careful about what you leave out...several years ago, my parents were cleaning our van, vacuuming, washing, etc. They undid my little brother's car seat, sprayed it down, scrubbed it and left it in the driveway to dry. They went in the house for lunch and when they came out the car seat was gone. I try to avoid taking things that don't say "free" on them.

My best find was the beautiful pedestal sink currently installed in our downstairs bathroom. It's a nice big size, would have cost me nearly a grand at a store.

Best finds:

bicycle with training wheels (and bell!)
wooden doll high schair
kid-sized card table
sand box with lid (x2; sold one)
wooden kid-sized chair
kid-size snow shovels

It is amazing what people will put in the trash. The first two I listed were trashed the day after our neighbor had a garage sale; they hadn't sold those things. Why didn't they offer them to us; they know we have a kid!

I am a garbage picker too, but I often feel like I am stealing. I am so afraid that the garbage owners will see me and get mad or call the police. Should I just ask...probably, but I'm timid.

Someone gave us a diaper genie as a shower gift for DD. We used it for a while, but it really became a pain and we quit using it. It just politely sat in the corner of DD's room. Well, when we moved two years later we realized that we never dumped the diaper genie after we quit using it. EEEEEWWWWWW.... Neither of us wanted to open that thing, so we just stuck it out with the trash.

Someone took it....We still laugh.

When I was 13, my four girlfriends went with my family and I to dinner. We took my father's van, because there were so many passengers. We had a nice time... until, on the way home, my father saw an old rusty stove sitting in someone's garbage pile beside the road. He pulled over, made us all get out and help load the hideous thing into the van, and then all us girls in our nice going-out clothes had to cram in around his "find". I was so embarrassed I thought I would DIE.

Nowadays, of course, I do it myself. If I see a rocker or a shelf beside the road, I scab it right up.

I can't wait to do it when I'm chauferring a load of DS's friends...

I gave my ex-husband six months to come get his stuff. At the end of it, I took his leather jacket to his house and tossed it over his back gate (it was expensive) and I put the rest in the car park next to our block with a "Please take one" sign on it. It had all gone in an hour.

I embarrass my dh to no end by being trash picker. DS1 has inherited my gene and looks for good stuff as we drive home each day.

We have a trash collection for large items a couple of times a year. We live beside two well-off people, who throw out perfectly good items, and I resist the urge to steal stuff from the piles, only because I think my mother would disown me XD.
