New Ped Praised me for bf'ing 19 mo ds!!

Ds's babysitter caught strep. A week later ds (19 mos) and I came down with a cold & sore throat. I called dr appt for a throat culture. Our reg ped wasn't available so they gave me an appt with their newest dr. Dh was with us at appt and when the new ped asked what was going on, dh told her the situation and added that ds was still bfing. (I don't even know why he mentioned it). The dr. turned and went, "Allright!! That's great!! You are to be congratulated for sticking it out and bf'ing your son! That's why he's so healthy and so cute!" And then she proceeded to go on a little more about all the benefits of bf'ing. Ds, (thank you!) was on his absolute BEST behavior with her. Opened his mouth when she asked, took the swab like a champ, stood still on the scale and smiled, etc. She told him he was the best 19 mo old she had seen and he was lucky to have such a good mommy. The culture came back neg and she attributed it to his bf'ing and told us to keep up the good work. I was shocked. Did I come down with strep, pass out and wake up in an alternate ap reality????

My reg ped isn't anti bf'ing but she's not crunchy, ap etc. in any way shape or form. If ap was granola...she'd be a twinkie, KWIM? I was so pleased to be praised for my efforts. And I was even more pleased that she was sincere and happy for my ds! Hooray for good peds! :

awesome ped story--so wonderful when you actually encounter a ped who's enlightened about bfing. was the new dr younger, by any chance? I wonder whether it's a generational thing since it seems the science on the benefits of breastmilk has become more widely known (and presumably taught in med school) in recent years. for that reason, we specifically chose a young doctor (family practice physician this time) when we changed health insurance this year. so far, so good When I nursed my 21 mo ds at our first visit, she was impressed, though not quite as vocal and cheerleading about it as your new ped. (insert smilie with megaphone)

I love stories like that! I *heart* our ped for many reasons, but the main one is her support for breastfeeding. Thomas was hospitalized with a horrible intestinal virus for a few days in October. Our ped came to see us twice a day, and at one point I asked her about the nurses insistence on giving him Pediasure. I knew it had a lot of sugar and I also knew that the one time he drank it, he threw it back up. She called the nurse in and made sure she knew Thomas was a normally healthy, breastfed child, who needed only to be fed breastmilk (along w/the IV fluids he was recieving) while we were in their care. Every time we see her she asks Thomas if Mama is still feeding him "the Good Stuff" and does a little happy dance in her office when we say, "Yes!"

Thanks mamas! Yes this ped was younger - mid thirties maybe. I'm not sure what her story is, but she did look a little more like the birkenstock type than the other doctors. I'm just glad she's there!

Wow! That's so awesome.
I don't think our dr. is anti-BF, but I think I would be shocked if she praised me like that! How cool!
