Wedding Songs

Okay, help Bashful and me compile a list of songs to be played at the reception after our marriage ceremony next August. Traditional, nontraditional, from all eras, you name it. We're going for everything: from the L7 (or is it Breeder?) version of "We Are Family," to my favorite cheezy 80's songs by Debbie Gibson, to Cindy Lauper, Bob Dylan, and Sting songs, to more classical music, to swing songs, to "sweatin' to the oldies" type music. We've got to satisfy a diverse crowd and keep it fun! I can't wait to get some more ideas!

Give Yourself to Love

Okay, I'm a sappy old folkie, but this one by Kate Wolf was played at our wedding: lyrics

Kind friends all gathered round, there's something I would say
For what brings us together here has blessed us all this day
For love has made a circle and it holds us all inside
Where strangers are as family and loneliness can't bide.

So give yourself to love if love is what you're after
Open up your heart to the tears and laughter
and give yourself to love, give yourself to love.

I've walked these mountains in the rain, learned to love the wind
Been out before the sunrise to watch the day begin
I always knew I'd find you, but I never did know how
Like sunshine on a cloudy day, you stand before me now.
So give yourself to love...

Love is born in fire, it's planted like a seed
Love can't give you everything, but it gives you what you need
Love comes when you're ready, it comes when you're afraid
It'll be the greatest teacher, the best friend you have made.
So give yourself to love...

I was just gonna quote a few lines, but I really really love this song.

Sally Rogers Love Will Guide Us is another one, as is her Circle of the Sun... lyrics on demand. Mary.
You can't really dance to these, but therer won;'t be a dry eye in the place, and isn't that what weddings are all about

Good luck, sierra and bashful!

classics from the 4-H era

Sierra - I'm a not yet a mom in Colorado, thanks for your comment in the intros! I'm from Mass. originally, CO is VERY different, but special, and I am adjusting to a different lifestyle out here!

My suggestions, cliche as they probably will be, hail from my teenage years as a 4-Her, at events around the country. These were classic hits with teens of all sorts, and lots of amazingly wonderful adult volunteers as well. Back in Mass, we always had "Movin Mike" the dj, he was the best! Enjoy your festivities!

-of course, some version of the Electric Slide
-for the more techno kids, New Order's Bizarre Love Triangle is always great
-This may not be appreciated by all, but it's a classic 4-H dance tune - ACDC Shook Me All Night Long (honest!)
-again, cheese, but the 80's That's What Friends Are For is nice
-The Carpenter's We've Only Just Begun, on the "If I Were a Carpenter" cd from early 90's it's done by Grant Lee Buffalo (not a 4-H dance song, but very wedding-ish)

Sorry, thought I would think of more, but must run here... cheers!

Great songs!

Oh, man! I'm loving these suggestions! Keep 'em coming. At this rate, you all will come up with the only list I need. darlindeliasmom, those lyrics are something! Maybe we could play those during non-dancing times of the reception, like at the very end or something. elnachick, I especially love the Shook Me All Night Long suggestion. I almost forgot about that one.

Sierra

Oh, elnachick, I forgot to mention that it sounds like you and Bashful have a lot in common. She too is from MA originally. She went to college and hung around in Albany, NY for a few years after high school, and then she moved to CO, which was a huge adjustment for her! She must have done okay, though, because even she sometimes misses CO these days. She pops onto these boards every now and then, so I'm sure you'll hear all about it.

small (funny!) world!

well, I must tell you that my stuffed animal, which has bunked with me about 90% of my nights since turning 6 (I'm almost 29) is named Bashful! I thought I'd give him up after I started bunking with a human, but thankfully my partner is an understanding guy who puts up with my stuffed animal

Glad you liked the ACDC. Another fine selection in the slightly cliche realm might be a little Styx, after all such a day would be the best of times

Power of Two, Indigo Girls
My Maria - the Brooks and Dunn version. Not into country music, but it's fun and catchy

that's it for now

Sierra, if you want sappy, "Love is All Around" by Wet Wet Wet is great - one of my all time favourites. It was played at the end of Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Oh Sierra, do I have songs for you!!! I was just remarried this summer (8/9/01) on a beach in Kauai. It was just the three of us and then my husband's mom and two siblings. It was a intimate, wonderful event. Then we had our reception here and made our own cd's of fav. songs. Here are some:

For our wedding on the beachwe had played: True Companion by Marc Cohn, You'll Be in My Heart from Tarzan (It was the 1st movie the three of us ever went to together) and Faith Hill's Breathe. As my ds released butterflies, we had the hawaiian version by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What A wonderful World". That always makes us cry.

For our reception we had: "I think I love you"-Partridge Family, "How Sweet it is to be Loved by You"-James Taylor, "Coconut (Put the lime in the coconut....)-Harry Nilsson, "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love"-The Spinners, "I Say a Little Prayer"-Aretha Franklin, "Here & Now"-Luther Vandross, "No Ordinary Love"-Sade, Alot of K.C. & The Sunshine Band, "Love is the Answer"-Dan England, "Sexual Healing"-Marvin Gaye, Some Barry Manalow, Disco, Enya and Some Disney Songs for the kids.

I know, quite a list, but we had so much fun making these cd's together.

Have a wonderful time!

This is so fun! What an awesome list we've got going! I read the suggestions so far to Bashful a little bit ago, and she's been singing, singing, singing since. How fun! (Although she did threaten to veto my Shook Me All Night LongLOL). I'm lovin' this! Sierra

dancing stuff

well, no wedding was complete when I was a little kid without the Alleycat--I think it's from like the '40s! (and no, I'm not that old). And Philly weddings always have O Dem Golden Slippers, so all the drunks (I mean party guests) can do the Mummers Strut...
the Mummers are one thing that I gather doesn't transfer well to the rest of the country, but I've seen many a bride strutting across the floor

The perfect waltz

I'll always remember the song they were playing
The first time we danced and I knew
As we swayed to the music and held to each other
I fell in love with you

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance For the rest of my life?

I'll always remember that magic moment
When I held you close to me
As we moved together I knew forever
You're all I'll ever need

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance For the rest of my life?

Could I have this Dance - Anne Murray

I have to second "True Companion" by Marc Cohn. That is what I was coming here to suggest, but I see that lisamarie got to you first! It's an incredibly moving, beautiful song that fits the occation perfectly. I also like "Feels Like Home", I like the Bonnie Raitt version best, but then I've always been partial to Bonnie. I also always thought that if we were to have a traditional wedding ceremony (which we didn't) that I would play the song that my daddy wrote for me as well. It would be perfect for a Father/ Daughter dance if your into the kind of thing, but of course I would have to guess that you don't have access to that song!

This is awesome, awesome, awesome. I'm bad with names of songs and bands and singers (actually, I'm bad with names of names all around...from names of movies and actors to people I meet), so Bashful is helping me figure out what all these songs are. Anyway, keep it comin! It's great!

Good father daughter or daughter mother song: Thank You by Natalie Merchant.... "You've been so kind and generous, I don't know how you keep on giving....I'd like to thank you for it....nanananananananana...." I was supposed to have it for my daddy dance but the DJ was a drunk and forgot it so I got Don Ho.

Our song was "Memories Are Made of This" by Dean Martin

take a fresh and tender kiss
add one stolen night of bliss
one girl one boy
some grief
some joy
memories are made of this

(skipping some lyrics)

then add the wedding bells
one house where lovers dwell
three little kids for the flavor
stir carefully through the days
see how the flavor stays
these are the dreams you will savor...

That one is super hetero but sooo sweet that I had to share.

Other good songs...I think that song "Smooth" by Santana is pretty hot for dancing and I like when he sings "I would change my life to better suit your mood...you're so smooth.."

This is fun! I'll get back to you with more, and oh, try throwing in a little classic salsa and merengue.

Can you feel the love tonight, Elton John, last dance

my honey and I had an outdorr wedding , but dh hooked up a generator so we could have music -

We walked in during the opening 10 minutes of Shine on Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd - Its all insturmental. Then played a Fleetwood Mac song - Songbird. Our final song was Have I told you lately that I love you by Van Morrison.

We had a band at the wedding that played mostly Beatle tunes and my hubby and his best men played some eighties music that their band used to play in high school..... It was a blast!

Enjoy your wedding!!!
