I have both a clamp and a cord. The midwife told me she switchs to the tape. Not sure when or why.

We just had a cotton cord. It came in the birth kit and worked great. I really liked that it was soft and not scratchy or hard.

When I am helping at a homebirth, my first preference is to use the cord tape. It doesn't get caught up in clothes or diaper the way that the clamps do and you don't have to remove it the next day the way that you would have to remove the clamp. That said, you have to tie it very hard to get it to work and about 1/3 of the time I have to clamp the cord anyway or tie it off again with a second piece of tape to get the cord to stop oozing. I think it is nice to have both.

I use cord tape, but I just ordered a cord bander. I cannot stand plastic cord clamps, though I use two metal cord clamps when cutting the cord initally, then we tie it off closer to the baby with tape and cut it shorter.

My MW used a cord bander and I really liked it. It didn't catch on anything and was really neat and clean looking.
