Bartering.....need some feedback

We live in a small farming community and have been discussing the possibility of starting a bartering system here. Has anyone been involved in a community where bartering was running succesfully? Any resources i.e. books, websites,etc.? Maybe a modified bartering system? What makes bartering work and/or not work? I would love some feedback.

I can't really say I've been involved but there is a barter system in my area. They have alot of useful looking information on thier site. Here's the link www.earthskyexchange.org

Google "Ithaca Hours" and see what you can find. The town of Ithaca, NY has one of the most successful and well-established barter systems in the U.S. (not to mention a v. cool community health program).

Years ago I remember reading in a homesteading magazine about a community on the east coast that had a successful bartering program. Ithaca must be it. i'll definitely check it out. My thanks to you, as well.

Um, that sounds more like an alternative currency than barter to me. Not that I see anything wrong with it, just don't get why it's being called barter if it isn't.
