low pelvic pain

for the last 2 or 3 days I have been having a very sharp pain low in my pelvis every time the baby moves his head. When he isnt moving I feel pressure all the time. The pain is comparable to the sharp stab that goes to your toes when the dentist doesnt numb all the way. It takes my breath away and brings me to tears. Anyone know what this could be from? My due date is somewhere around March 22.

TIA

Caitlinsmom:

What you are talking about sounds like symphisis pubis separation. The symphisis pubis is the joint between the two pelvic bones, and during pregnancy the amount of relaxin flowing through your body can cause the area to gap a bit, which can be very painful. Movements where one leg raises above the other (such as walking up stairs) will usually increase the pain, as will straddling poses used when getting into/out of bed or the car.

I'm sorry that you are hurting, mama! A support belt to help hold the joint together might be helpful in alleviating some of the pain, and acupuncture or chiropractic work are said to be effective for some women. Hot baths or hot water bottles can also help, and some women find it necessary to limit physical exercise to avoid straining the joint. And to help you get through it, keep in mind that once your pregnancy is over and your hormone levels regulate again, you should experience total relief from the pain.

That said, there is a condition known as symphisis pubis diastasis, where the connective tissues do NOT return to their normal state after birth. If your pain continues after the baby is born, you may want to see your healthcare provider about it.

Hope this helps! Take care, and have a beautiful birth . . .

I've also read that UTI's (which are very common in pregnancy) can present themselves as a pain, sometimes sharp, in the lower pelvis...just FYI...

I had that pain from around 4 months on. It is GONE. Magically disappeared after delivery. OH I'm so happy! I slept with a pillow under my belly when sleeping on my side to help take the weight of my belly off the area. Also, a pillow between my knees. I tried keeping my legs together as much as possible and would sit to put pants on and things like that.
I also did an exercise where i laid on my back with my knees bent and slightly apart and had Dimitrius gently push outward on my legs while I squeezed in. It seemed to help keep it in place better so it hurt less.

Oh thank you thank you! What you guys described sounds just like what I feel, I am going to a chiropractor this week and also get a massage. I will definatly try out that exercise and see if that helps. Thanks guys, at least I am not the only one with it.

I had this with my DD as well. Oh my gosh it hurt so badly I really wanted to cry every morning getting out of bed. Now in my case as I got closer to my EDD and the baby was bigger it got better. I assumed that she was sort of filling up my pelvis a bit more and stabilizing things. Oh it was such a relief to have it gone. Knock wood I've only had a few twinges this time around. Hope you get some relief soon.
