Cricket is excellent! There are some related magazines (all named after bugs) for younger kids.

I don't know how old your child is, but I love this kids' magazine - All Round.

Here's a link:

I second (third, forth, whatever...) Cricket, Spider, etc. My kids love National Geographic World also.

Chirp, Chickadee and Owl are also great magazines.

My kids like Archaeology's DIG magazine. I think it's published bi-monthly?? My two oldest are 6 and 11 but even the 4 year old likes to look at the pictures.

PS if you are squeamish about mummies, then this may not be the magazine for you.

I like click (younger) and muse (older) published by the same people who do spider/cricket, etc. except these are non-fiction mags.
Click is great for "unit study" type stuf with preschool/elementary since each issue is on a theme. and they have a web site for parents with related books/activities etc.

www.clickforparents.com

It's a bit pricey but there are no ads. (excpet order cards for their other mags)

For any Thomas the Tank Engine lovers I highly recommend Thomas & Friends magazine. My 4 yr. old ds loves it & it's very educationally minded - all stories & activities have something to teach.
