Question about Procion Dyes and Hemp Fleece

Thread Starter
This weekend I have dyed some hemp using fiber reactive procion dyes.
I used a big bin, 2lbs/6 gallons of water, followed the directions, and I'm finding that the colour is not even, it's darker in spots than other spots. This is happening in all four colours, hot pink, brilliant blue, orchid, and a bit less in soft orange. Am I doing something wrong? Or is this the way it turns out?
Please some one help me!

Are you stirring profusely? Did you pour the soda ash directly on the fabric *that is a no-no*, Did you prewash the hemp several times on hot and use synthrapol in the first wash to remove oils?

nope, nope, nope

Hi Stacey,
so I should be stirring all the time for the entire 20 minutes?
Also, you think I should use the synthrapol for the hemp fleece? I didn't think I needed to. But perhaps I should purchase some.
Thanks!

I use Dharmas directions.. http://www.dharmatrading.com/info/vat_dye.html

And YES to the Synthrapol!! Or some of other Textile/oil/greaseremoving detergent/soap. Hemp fleece comes from the factory with alot of oils on it just like prefolds do and I always wash hemp fleece with syn then of course it runs through the washer/dryer 4-5 times to allow for shrinking before I sew with it!! HTH!!

Yes to the stirring too... "stir frequently"
