sewing diaper questions...

Okay, I got fabric... a yard of terry velour (!), and a yard of flannel. I also got 2 yards of elastic. I've got two patterns off the web for a fitted (with velcro).
Now, what to do? I was thinking terry out for outer snappiable side, flannel inside, and I'm wondering if it would be good to sew a doubler on top of the flannel to fold in thirds with the terry velour, or to make a pocket so I have an adjustable fitted (night or day), or if I should make a snappable doubler topped with velour or fleece or something. I can't just have a stray one- my boy doesn't keep still, and there's no way it'll stay in for this. I wonder about buying snaps to put on it- definitely my preferred method, chasing a toddler. Those snap plier looking things at Joann's for 16-17 dollars... are those what I need? Are they easy to use? Is it worth it to purchase it? I also saw a piece of plastic at the SnapStore.com that you use with a hammer... ???? I know I will put terry on the outside for snappis since I can't buy snaps right now, but any suggestions? Tell me about the hook and loop velcro- I just don't like the looks of it, but never tried it. Is it cheaper? Does everything in the universe cling to it like I think it would?

The last thing I need is a serger... ha! like I can afford that. I worry about sewing two layers and flipping inside out- I moved from pockets because all those little places seem to hold gunk. Am I over-reacting? I would do anything for a serger... ever heard of renting one?

Tried both, neither holds up to diapering. In both cases after a few weeks the snaps fell out, then I had this delightful back poky piece of the snap floating around the inside of the diaper. Not good.
I hear you can get the nice acrylic snaps and a snap press like the WAHMs use. Snap press around $60-70 from what I hear.

Never heard of renting a serger.

Yeah, I didn't like the hammer on snaps either. I confess to buying one long ago to try it out and it was kind of a pain. My snaps didn't fall out though but if I put them on wrong it was horrible trying to get them off. If you want a quick drying soaker you could just sew the ends or sides down the to inner layer. I've started liking this method much more-then its not flopping around and you don't have to worry about your snaps ever breaking off, etc. Though the resin snaps are pretty durable to begin with.

Hook and loop has always worked for us (esp. for quick changes) but definitely sew some fold back laundry tabs on! Otherwise it will cling to everything in the wash.

For snapping, try this link - you can mail your marked dipes in to be snapped. And as far as serging, have you checked out your local community college or adult ed programs? We have an awesome AE program here with lots of sewing classes and I think they are only $20 for 12 weeks. You get access to all the machines plus someone to help you along. HTH and have fun on your diaper making adventure!

I had the little plastic thingy from the snap store. All in all I just HATE metal snaps. I used them when I first started while I was waiting for my resin snap press. But I still occasionally get returns for metal snaps that fell off. Velcro sticks to stuff, but if you sew in some laundry tabs and don't forget to use them like I always do it's not a problem. Don't use the velcro stuff you find in stores though, it's really stiff and you'll hate it. Get touchtape or aplix instead.
