I, too, long to buy an air filter. I'm thinking Sharper Image or Oreck.

Anyone??

I LOVE my Sharper Image! I got it after the big fires in Los Angeles a couple years ago. I couldn't walk from the house to the car because of the smoke. It was horrible! We got one and that baby takes care of everything.

There was a thread here about air filters earlier, you might want to search the forum.

We have a Friedrich C90. Consumer Reports did ratings on air cleaners a couple of years ago, and it was on top. It's big, but it's quiet, and it works. It's a bit more expensive than the Sharper Image ($400 vs $300), but CR HATED the Sharper Image - said it doesn't work on anything bigger than a closet or something like that. Oreck just came out with an electrostatic air cleaner, which might be worth taking a look at. It's a lot smaller than mine is. The air filters that use HEPA filters get very expensive to run, because you have to replace the filters - the electrostatic ones have reusable plates you just wash in the dishwasher or the bathtub.

I've been oogling the Plasmacluster Ion (I think it's by Sony but not sure). Anyway, the research I've done on the web has been pretty positive, and it comes in three sizes depending on how big a space you have. It neutralizes airborne nasties by pumping charged ions into the air but also has a traditional filter in it for bigger things like dander and dust. If anyone has tried this one, I would love to hear personal opinions as we will likely be buying one in the summer.

Bump

Just bumping this with more info. Here's a website where you can see the Plasmacluster Ion (it's by Sharp not Sony). http://www.sharp.ca/products/ion/

I'd really love to hear if anyone has experience with this one or knows someone who does.

We have a Filter Queen Defender Air Purifier. It was very pricey (DH bought it off of tv for 1000+ over a year ago). I can't say it was worth the price, because I have never used another.
It does work, though. We had our basement flood and mildew formed under the carpets last fall. I plugged the filter queen in downstairs for 2 weeks, and the smell was almost gone. It helps with my allergies as well as odors left by the dog. It has pricey up keep, about 100 a year, but by keeping it up you automatically renew your warrenty with the company. It is almost silent, but can be great "white noise" when on high.

Here's a review from epinions.

jeca, did some bumping for you. the one on ozone air purifiers was interesting. product decisions like these are hard to make... seem like somthing always contradicts something else.
