Buying a new refridgerator......need some advice...

I have been hearing really good things about the LG french door with the freezer at the bottom. I have ony had a traditional refriderator. Does anyone have any brand of these french door style? I know whirlpool, kenmore, amana etc. all make them. I just am curious if once you get them if you like them....we never drink city water, but so use ice...they both have ice makers and I think it would be great to have it on the door, but I'd lose the capability to be able to put wide serving dishes in a traditional side by side...... I am considering between these two.

So what do you think?

When we had a house not an apt, we got the 2nd only b/c we wanted ice and water. I much prefer that feature even though I like the design and set up of the 1st.

My friend has the 1st though and her kids always got into the freezer.

What is more important to you?

the freezer thing concerned me....not that they would get in it and get locked in, because I watch them. LOL, but that they may get popcicles out on their own or openit, run away and it all thaws. LOL. Our city water is gross. I have a water cooler I use. I like the set up for large cakes etc., where in a side by side I think I have less room. It is more importnat for me to have more fridge room over freezer, as I have a freezer in the basement. KWIM?

We had an Amana with the freezer on the bottom. It was okay, but we sold it with our last house. I thought it would be really great since we hardly use the freezer part, but it wasn't as convenient as I'd hoped. I got tired of stooping down to get cubes. Kind of a pain w/littles in the sling. Plus, my guys were always into the ice

We now have a side-by-side with a pass-through opening on the fridge door which I !!!!

We have the freezer on the bottom kind I love love love it, can't say enough wonderful things about it. There hasn't been a day that I wish it was on top or a side by side.

Another vote for freezer on the bottom. I love mine!

summie :LOL I did not mean into the freezer, literally. I meant they were always opening it up and taking things out, hiding things, throwing ice, etc. :LOL

That is a funny image.

We're remodeling our house after a fire and just bought the LG french door/freezer on the bottom fridge. We love it. Haven't moved in or used it yet, but every time I see it, I love it.

We had a freezer on the bottom before, and loved it. We use the fridge so much more, it just makes sense to have it eye level. And I just love the way the french doors look. I don't know what it is - maybe the look of a side by side, but convenience of freezer on the bottom.

Good luck!

:LOL LCD huh?

Summie, I will have to ask my mom what the exact model is, but they have a side by side by Sub Zero. It has a full size fridge and the half freezer. It rocks. You can fit everything in that you could imagine, but with the water and ice feature (which I need b/c I am an ice water fiend).

So you get the features the PP love with the water and ice.

We just recently bought a side by side. I really, really like it.

I have never owned a fridge w/ bottom freezer so I can't really give my opinion about that.

My only thought on that is that I hate having to bend down to get things. I like the side by side because I can store my most used things up high. Whether it's in the freezer or fridge, you know?

If you have a chest freezer, do you really need a freezer on the fridge too? I prefer the freezer on the top.

we bought a side by side for our home. dh wanted ice in the door, we got one with a LOCK feature. only works if you set it...

bought our parents a solid door fridge top freezer bottom. I used it for 3 days before we left. very nice. after the fact i would have preferred a drawer on the bottom instead of a door.

FWIW, my kids get itno the side by side freezer all the time. DS2 loves frozen tator tots and ds3 likes waffles.

I don't know about the door on the bottom, but I would give the brand LG a big 'ole thumbs down. We got one about a year ago and it is not a high quality appliance...

We were constantly finding formerly frozen stuff in the weirdest places! Frozen corn behind the sofa, tater tots everywhere...and lots and lots of ice puddles. On the upside, it took my oldest much longer to start getting into things in the fridge But, this also had a downside, as we always had to get him stuff out of the fridge since he wasn't tall enough to get his own snacks without help. Pick yer poison

georgia :LOL

yes, this sounds familiar.

My parents side by side Sub Zero is SO hard to open versus my old Frigidaire side by side. No way my son could open their's but he opened ours all the time. Bonus was I could put certain things up high, but with the freezer on the bottom..not possible.

:LOL meco....I thought the same thing, and I was surprised I hadn't thought of it before! The kids climbing in the freezer :LOL

I have a Kenmore one with the freezer at the bottom. It's an extra large fridge, barely fits in the space we have for it in the kitchen. But I really love it. I mean how often do you open the fridge vs. the freezer, and have to squat down to get stuff out of the fridge? This way I open and there's everything right at my level. The doors are big enough to hold 4 gallons of milk in the shelves, and the main shelves are glass so if something leaks it stays on the shelf rather than dripping through all over the stuff below it. The shelves also slide out if you need to get something in the back. It's about 6 years old and I still like it a lot.

One warning, if you get a model with the freezer on the bottom. It's not that safe for little ones. I guess a fridge would have the same risks. Abi was never able to pull it open until this year but I have a safety lock on it just in case (one of those stick on straps and buckles you can buy anywhere).

I know side-by-sides don't have as much usable space as top-freezer models (which are also the most efficient to operate, btw). I suppose the one you're talking about would sort of split the difference.
Irishmommy, we have a fridge/freezer and a chest freezer in the basement. I doubt many people keep their chest freezers anyplace convenient to the kitchen, so it's nice to have a freezer "staging area," not to mention that all the bulky Costco stuff can take up space in the chest instead of the little freezer over the fridge. Stuff lasts longer in a deep-freeze, too.
