butterfly wings

I want to make waldorf style butterfly wings for my large two and a helf year old. Is there a place online with instructions?

letabug, I'm going to be making some of these for my oldest's Halloween costume. I had her lay down on some brown paper yesterday and we traced her "wingspan" and figured out what shape she wanted. From here I'm going to cut out two pieces of silky fabric and sew them right sides together. I probably should be sure to trim the seam allowance before I turn it so it won't show through the fabric. I plan to gather the middle back some to make them look like seperate wings. I'll need to attach a ribbon or yarn ring for her finger, so she can fly. Last, I plan to sew them to her costume dress. You could sew on wide ribbon ties to cross over the chest and tie at the back waist. The ties would have to be pretty long for that. I hope this is helpful. I can let you know how it works out if you like.

They are fairly simple to make. You can use a 36x36 playsilk you already have, dye a new one(lotsa fun ) or buy a square of fabric you like. You will also need ribbon(double sided) about an inch wide.

Cut 2 lengths of ribbon about 56". Also cut 4 lengths 12" each,these will be looped for arms and hands to go through so you can adjust length to fit your child.

Fold the silk in half, iron folded edge, then unfold and lay out on flat surface. Place one 56" length underneath the silk, centered at the crease and with about 24" hanging out at one end. Mirror this on the top of the silk with the other 56" length. Pin the 2 ribbons together with the bottom edge of the silk.

Gather the center crease of the silk until only about 6 or so inches of ribbon is left laying over the silk. Pin the ribbons together at the top edge of the silk. Sew the ribbons to the top and bottom center edges of the silk.

Hem, so to speak, the edges of the shorter lengths. I do between 1/4" to 1/2". Fold these lengths in half. Attach a loop to each top corner(these are for the hands to loop through). The other 2 loops of ribbon are for further up the arm, so it is up to you at what point along the top edge you want to put them. I suggest more than halfway between the edge and the center(err...closer to the center ).
