How do I do it? I have heard of doing it for multiple things but I have never bothered to figure out how? What/how do I mix it? What has worked for you?

TIA!

The basic rules are the more Kool Aid, the brighter the color (so use less for a lighter/pastel color). The more water, the more even the color (for even color, make sure the water covers the wool completely without crowding. For a swirly/tye dye effect, use very little water). The wool sucks up the color out of the water, so eventually the water will become clear. Don't freak; this means you're about done.

The *trick* to it is using super hot water and vinegar. Whatever you do, don't move the wool around in the hot water or it will felt.
  • Soak wool in a basin of hot water with a bit of vinegar until water is cool. Gently sqeeze out extra water & set aside. This strips the wool so that the color deposits more evenly.
  • Add more hot water to basin & stir in Kool Aid. Gently set wool into the water, poking under parts that float up, and leave until water is CLEAR and cool.
  • Gently squeeze out extra water. Add a bit of vinegar to the water & soak for a few minutes to set. Gently sqeeze out extra water & set aside.
  • Wash, re-lanolize well, & dry the wool as usual before using.

For the best Kool Aid color swatch reference I've seen, check out knitty (it's at the bottom of the page: http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall02/FEATdyedwool.html

Have fun... and post pics when you finish!

You can also dye nylon (like Bummis super whisper pants) in addition to silk and wool!

And you can use food coloring instead of koolaid so you are not limited to the flavors/colors.
Here's a bunch of covers I did with concentrated gel food coloring from the cake decorating dept. I just mixed a squirt of one or more colors with a glop of vinegar and enough water to fill my largest ceramic mixing bowl, heated it up and soaked my items for a few minutes. All have been through the washing machine and no fading hurray! Keep out of the sun though or it will fade.
