Need a good comeback to..

the annoying phrase:

"You can't change the world!"

I'm sick of people saying that to me with respect to my ideals. I want a quick phrase that will shut them up without making me look like a hot head.

Anyone?

I'm right there with ya mama! I am sick to death of that phrase! I usually just say "one person can make a difference, even if small" and let them think whatever they want.
I am making a difference, I am raising a child......
"No, but I can change my corner of it"
Perhaps not, but I can live knowing I didnt contribute to making it worse.
Maybe thats a little lame but I have nothgin better at the moment.

Gosh, I heard that so many times when running for office - it's such an ANNOYING phrase! I just tell them I'm going to change as much of the world as I can, and that I want the world to be better off because I was here for awhile.

I've heard that before :)

You sure can't if you don't at least TRY.

Maybe not, but I can't ignore _____.

Well, at least I can sleep at night knowing I'm doing my best to ______.

I'm not trying to change the world, just ______.

Or the more philosophical: Yes, but a pebble thrown into a pond makes large ripples....

That's interesting you think that one person can't change the world. I've found that I really can make a difference. Perhaps you might try it sometime. It feels really good.

Hmmm, what about Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr, Thomas Edison, Peggy O'Mara (), etc, etc.

Or the Margaret Mead quote about never doubt that a small group of concerned people can make a difference, in fact, it's the only thing that ever has....something like that!

Or just smile, shake your head and realize that it's THEIR problem, not yours

Or stare blankly at them for a long time like you didnt understand what they were saying. May make them feel weird.

But I love you anyway.

I am snarky and hit despair.com when I need inspiration.

I like Irishmommy's answer.

Either that or, "I sure am glad MLK (or Ghandi or any other inspirational activist) didn't feel that way."

Oh, and after you tell them to shut up, you can squirt them in the eyes with breastmilk.

If people can not change the world then the world would remain unchanged - and it has not - so clearly this statement is false. I doesn't even make any sense when you think about it. And, it is not just activists who change the world - scientists, doctors, politicians, cult leaders, murderers, and inventors, for example, change the world. We all do.

Also, the M. Mead quoe is very nice in this regard. (I see it is already suggested).

Wow! Now all I have to do is choose one of these or memorize them all.

As fas as "shut up" goes...I have fantasies of being able to say this to MIL one day. :LOL Everytime I tell her about something we're doing (or she just notices at our house) like CDs or cloth napkins, she says: "We'll see how long that lasts!" : grrr...I'd love to say "Shut the (h-e-double hockey sticks) up!"
