question about supplementation post partum...

Hi there, I am wondering if any of you had any experience or success with this...

I know many factors contribute to depression, especially post partum and I am not suggesting there is a "cure-all" or that you can completely prevent it if it is in your biological make-up to get it, etc...so please don't misunderstand me, I know depression is a serious condition and I am not trying to suggest it can just be prevented etc...

...however, after that disclaimer lol...I was wondering, I am kind of paranoid about getting post partum depression (I am due in May)...I have never been officially diagnosed with depression, though the teen years were not a picinic in that area, and I have been prone to mood swings, though nothing severe....I also have bad PMS which may be a factor etc...

Anyway, since all my psychological factors seem to be in order--i.e. very supportive husband, planned pregnancy, finances are okay, I feel safe in my home, I am planning a homebirth, I am at an emotionally stable point in my life where I feel ready for children etc and so on...I am thinking if I DO get it, it will probably be biological....since about 5 days post partum estrogen and progesterone levels plummet....
...so I was thinking maybe taking in a lot of soy post partum (please don't tell me soy is bad, I have heard it all and I am confident the benefits outweigh the risks)....because of the plant estrogen....and also thinking of using a natural progesterone creme as well, just to kind of balance things out...

...anyone else tried this and had success with it? I am thinking it sounds logical for minor/hormone induced depression (or baby blues) etc...

Any thoughts? Even if it doesn't help a lot, do you think it could do any harm to the baby, as I will be breastfeeding...

Sorry for rambling so....

There is helpful information in a book called "Mother Nurture." It is about what the authors term postpartum depletion (which can influence PPD and/or other health and well-being issues). The book gives all sorts of ideas of how to help recover from or avoid depletion...everything from homeopathics to vitamins to western meds. I really, really liked the book. Great stuff.
