Pre-washing organic cotton thread?

I'm planning on sewing some organic cotton birdseye flats for my DS and wanted to use organic cotton thread, too. I thought I read a recommendation to pre-wash the thread somewhere...

Is this true? How do you pre-wash the spool and get it dry without it either unwinding into a mess or molding inside?

Hmm, never heard of such a thing. I have NO idea.. Maybe it just said to prewash the fabric, not the thread?
