Help with rug braiding?

Thread Starter
I'm thinking of trying my hand at rug braiding and would ultimately like to make a large rug for our living room. My plan is to use cotton fabrics since I have lots of scraps to get me started. Will the braids be sturdy enough on their own with cotton material or do I need to use something else as an inner core? Any instructional book recommendations would also be appreciated!

TIA!

I haven't done this yet, but I found a set of tips that you put the strips through and which fold them so the edges are all tucked inside as you braid. You move the metal pieces along as you braid and they fold as they go. Maybe those can still be found at crafts stores? I would think that they'd make braiding rugs much easier.

I think if the fabric is heavy enough, no need for anything else. The whole idea is that you're recycling scraps anyway, isn't it?
