OK, so I made my first practice dipes out of pleather instead of PUL... and I must say, I'm amazed that they still hold in the wetness. They look and sound awful after washing in hot water (maybe cold or warm would keep the pleather intact, but too bad!), but I guess are functional.
(They sound crinkly. The slick side of the pleather wrinkles up. And occasionall pulls away from the fabric side.)
So if you want to practice sewing dipes using pleather, you at least won't be wasting your time, LOL. The wet bag I made is holding up fine too.
