Where do you find out about sewing machines?

Am a beginning beginner. Haven't even begun yet.

Am buying myself a present: A sewing machine. This week. I hope. And need to know how to find what I am going to get. Want to sew very basic clothes-type beginner stuff. No bells and whistles necessary ... at least not yet.

Do I look in Consumer Reports? Or is there a link that anyone can send me to?

Try the Sewing World Commons They have a whole board on sewing machines with forums for each brand. They were a ton of help when I upgraded my serger.

Okay. Am overwhelmed.

Any recommendations for an inexpensive beginner machine? eBay is overrun with them, and have no clue where to begin. And all the reviews just blew my brain out of the water, so ...

Any brands to look for? Are we allowed to ask/recommend like that here?

Or any particular model numbers?

I always recommend trying an old Singer. Either 400 or 500 series. They are super user friendly, really hard to break and easy to fix if you do Try to get one from an original owner or 2nd owner, ask a ton of questions about the history. If you want to give it a go, join the VintageSingers Yahoo group, they can help with what to look for.
