Diaper patterns and materials

I'm thinking of attempting to make my own fitted diapers. Do you know where I can find a pattern and what types of material I should use?

Thanks.

I really like the Honey Boy pattern. It was easier for me than other. The VB is also another, and I have heard great things about the Goodness Gracious Diaper pattern. I am using Wind Pro and Micro fleece to make Honey Boy pockets. Very easy, and I get to stuff them with whatever I want.

Used clothing is good for cutting up & playing around with diaper sewing. Depending on what you use, you can get some pretty hard-wearing diapers made for next to nothing! There are free diaper patterns around on the web, too - try googling for "cloth diaper pattern" and see what you come up with!

here's one: http://www.diapersewing.com/fitted_with_velcro.htm

If you do a search here at mothering (if the update didn't mess it all up), you should fine a few other posts with pattern links. Here's one: http://www.mothering.com/discussions...diaper+pattern

The above poster didn't do any self promoting, but I got great tips and ideas from her web site! www.fernandfaerie.com ... "make your own diapers" or something like that.

I found some towel fabric on the remnant shelf at a craft store, and got my microfleece at Joann's. I got my PUL in a couple of trades here on the Trading Post. I like to pick up remnant cotton prints. I have an overabundance of flannel baby blankets and plan to use those. And I have loads of old clothes and fabric I use to make rag rugs that I can also use to make diapers. So far I've really just used the microfleece and PUL (or pleather, ha ha) to make pocket diapers.

I can't wait to go to the thrift store and find some wool sweaters so I can try a butt sweater!

Have fun.

One stop Diaper Shop has a few different patterns and they also have a list of supplies that you will need for each pattern. They sell the fabric and notions as well. I'm thinking of ordering some things from them soon.
Also I found The Fabric Farm has cheaper prices on some of the fabrics.

I second the Very Baby AIO pattern. It's VERY simple and VERY adorable. You can buy it and everything else you'll need at www.diapershop.com. She (Jessica) also has a supplemental site with other projects that use their patterns at www.sewdiapers.com

Good luck and have a blast! I think it's more addictive than buying new : : :LOL

How much do you save by making your own? I am interested in persuing making some (I'm thinking the very baby AIO) but I'm not very good at sewing and I don't want to invest a bunch of $$ since I am quite skeptical of my sewing ability

I have the VB AIO and like it a lot. I also have the Cuddlebuns and like the bikini version. I just got the Honeyboy and Darling Diapers- they look nice, but I haven't had time to make any yet.

I think fabric is a personal choice, look at some WAHM sites to see what diapers you like and then see what they used. I like the trimness of PUL, but I'm making some fleece too because I like the softness of it!

Meaghan- I think you can save quite a bit just by following the VB suggestions, and even more depending on how good a fabric shopper you are!

For instance (according to the One Stop Diaper Shop) to make 12 PUL/Birdseye AIOs you'll need about 3.5 yd PUL (about $8/yd = $28), and about 24 yds of Birdseye (about $3/yd = $72) plus 2 yds diaper flannel (about $3/yd = $6).

So for around $106 you'll have 12 diapers- It sounds like a lot but that's a little over $8 per AIO!!! Oh, add in the pattern price, it's still cheap- $9.75 each. I didn't count shipping because you'd pay that anyway.

That's just a rough estimate, I do diapers individually because I like variety, and I buy material at local fabric shops as well as online so my costs vary. I also use left-over material I have around the house... But bottom line, it's cheaper than buying them, I think it's more fun, and you can customize the pattern to fit your child!
