First Diaper SnS: Poquito Pants!!

This is a semi-xpost from the EC forum, but I'm just so tickled that I wanted to share with some seamstresses.

I am planning on EC'ing the babe I'm expecting next month, using fitted diapers and wool soakers as back-up. I am sewing up (or intend on sewing up!) 20 medium Poquito Pants (the smalls are really, really tiny and look like they'd only fit for a month or so). It's taken me forever to get all the pieces cut out, etc.

I've finally gotten around to actually assembling the diapers and wanted to post a link to my first one . I am making them turned and topstitched, with hemp jersey outers, organic cotton french terry inners (loops inwards) and cotton french terry hidden soakers. I don't have fasteners on them yet; I'm waiting on an order for aplix. And, of course, no model yet, but that'll be fixed in about a month

They really come together pretty well after you get the rhythm down. For any who are sewing them turned and topstitched, I've found that they seem to come together much easier if you don't stretch the inner to meet the outer; ie, if both inner and outer are the same size (I get wrinkled outers otherwise). It also looks nicer if I sew to points on the wings, rather than trying to curve.

You can see the photos of my first PP here. There are some sewing booboos in this one, but I am hoping the next will be more professional looking

That looks REALLY good! I love that color! What kind of closure are you using? I'm considering buying the Piquito Pants pattern but I totally didn't understand the short cuts you mentioned!

Thanks, I'm all excited about them

I'm going to be using aplix. I don't have a snap press, but considered using snap source metal snaps...then decided that dh would be much more likely to use them, and they'd be more likely to last longer, if I used aplix. I usually have to pull pretty hard with metal snaps, and there are only two layers of fabric under the fasteners, so I was concerned about them possibly pulling through.

It really is a well thought out pattern, and even though it's a bit pricey, in my case at least, I figured it was worth it. It is so incredibly trim! But it does look like it should have enough absorbancy. The shortcuts would make sense after you'd sewn through one of them; the only really vexing thing has been that the outer pieces are larger than the inners. Presumably, that means you should stretch the inners to fit, but this isn't really addressed...anywho, it seems to work better for me when I don't mess with stretching.

I'm trying to get the first ten finished up before the aplix arrives...some yummy sage-colored hemp jersey is coming with it to adorn the outers of the second ten

Looks great - they also turn out great and are super easy with FOE binding.

Aw, they're adorable :)

They look so nice and soft! Where did you find the colored hemp jersey? It's a beautiful color!

Thanks!

I actually tried making AIOs with FOE, but I had a really hard time with the FOE---it seemed finicky and was stressing out about it. So, I just decided to make fitteds. But I imagine that if you already know how to use FOE, it would be super simple.

The hemp came from the WAHM who runs Harmony Threads. She sometimes posts fabric FS over at the Amity Mama sewing board. Actually, that's where the hemp french terry came from too
