Knit is any fabric that is made by looping threads over needles (as opposed to weaving them). Jersey is the simplest, it's called a single knit. The front has lines and the back has crosses. Interlock is a double knit, both sides are identical. Then there is rib which is a chunkier version of a double-knit, both sides are also identical, but the "ribs" are more obvious than on interlock. Jersey is the least stretchy, rib the most stretchy and interlock in the middle.

French terry is sort of like jersey, but is loopy on the back, fleece is when the loops have been brushed. Knit terry is like french terry but with big loops and when it's brushed it's called sherpa.

There are lots of other variations, but that's the basics

Aw, geez I'm just a textile geek. I could go on and on about fabric, it's a sickness

It is NOT a sickness, it is a honorable obsession!

I really love textiles too. The way a fabric feels and drapes, all the different fibers, knits and weaves...surface design and embellishment. All good. So if you're a geek, I'm a geek, and that is fine with me!

"Hi, my name is Robin and I am a fabric addict"

I remember one day in college I was sitting in my living room in front of my fabric dresser (Yes, I had a whole dresser just for fabric, what about it?! It was just for the nice stuff that didn't fit in my 4 storage boxes) Anyway, I was sorting through things that I had already cut out but hadn't finished and things that needed to be cut, etc. I had piles of fabric all around me, on my lap, above me hanging out of the drawers, over the ironing board, and I was just in heaven, stroking it, folding and refolding it. That was the moment I knew what my passion was

I've actually gotten very good about purging my stash and only keeping the really special stuff. I rarely get to shop for fabric anymore, though, so that has probably helped a bit, too.
