baby quilt question

I just finished the top of a baby quilt for my friend's baby that is due in May. I am SO proud of how it turned out! And I'm wondering at my options for backing it. The last time I tried to use binding it was AWFUL. I know I can do it sort of like a pillow and turn it, but then is my only option to tie it together with yarn? I don't really like the yarn tie look. Could I just quilt it after sewing all the edges together and turning? I would be quilting on the machine and I'm not too great at that either, so it would just be stich in the ditch around the blocks.

Any advice is appreciated!
TIA

I don't know but I want to see a picture! I'm just starting to get up the courage to start quilting! I was watching KBTC today and their quilting show was so inspiring. I've always wanted to and now I really want to! I'd love to see a picture of this baby quilt!

I make mine like a pillow. I hate the tied quilts. My oldest has one and twists them in her sleep. When she was younger she'd get them caught on her fingers, now she has pulled most of them out. I have tried machine quilting but the material always gets bunched up and it looks really bad so I hand quilt them in the same spots you would tie them. I am going to be switching to a natural batting that looks more like a piece of material than the loose poly batting I have been using. I don't know if I'll have to quilt it as much.

So you just quilt tiny spots? Could you elaborate just a little? I know very little about quilting. Thanks

I wish I could show you a picture, but I don't have a digital camera. Sorry.

On a block quilt I sew an X where the blocks meet. They're usually about 4" apart. The X itself is about 1/2" - 1".

That sounds like a something I could do, thanks Carrie.

If you use your machine to quilt it you need a walking foot. It is a special foot that guides the top fabric at the same rate it guides the bottom fabric.

Another idea for tying is to use crochet thread or embroidery floss (4-6 strands) they look a little nicer IMO.

I have been quilting for about 9 years now and it is soooo much fun to see the finished project.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I decided that I really wanted this to turn out "just right" so I've been hand quilting just a little around the blocks. My quilting isn't beautiful, but I can do a line around the edges, and it is coming out nicely.

Hi!
I've used this "mock binding" with very good results (and I'm very new to sewing and even newer to quilting) Heres the link to the directions. Theres alot of quilting info on this site too. Hope this helps!
