another vote for recycled fabrics here if you are looking to save $ and worried about making dipes for the first time and making (potentially expensive) mistakes. I just make sure things are 100% cotton (or dang close to it) and then look at the weight of the fabric and guess from there. 6 layers of hemp jersey is a good soaker IMO, so a couple more for a t-shirt soaker. I just eyeball it, does it look thick enough, does it feel heavy enough, etc. At least that's what i did for a lot of ds's dipes. its a nice way to use up your old clothes and experiment with different fits and styles without a lot of investment in fabrics.
