Hello, world! I'm Helena.

On the night of March 5th, I went to bed with what I thought were braxton hicks coming every 10 - 15 minutes. I'd been having them for days, so I didn't think much about it. At 12:15 a.m., I had a HUGE contraction that woke me up and I sat straight up in bed. I told my hubby that we needed to go to the birthing center NOW!! He rolled over and said, "Are you sure?" , then tried to go back to sleep!! After I whopped him in the arm really hard, he realized I was serious. I called my mom to come stay with the other kids. She lives 10 minutes from us, but I thought she would hurry, considering what was going on and that we live an hour from the birthing center. She finally arrived close to 20 minutes later. By that time, I was having my contractions every 2 minutes with only about a 15 second break between. My hubby was starting to get concerned, needless to say! So, we finally left at about 12:30.

We had been on the road for 20 minutes when my body took over and I started pushing! I told Tommy what was happening and he did what any husband in that situation would do--DRIVE FASTER!!! We were just about to get on the interstate(and we were only 10 minutes away) when we encountered something we hadn't planned on. The state troopers decided that night would be a good time to set up a roadblock on the onramp to check for sobriety!! We pulled up to the cop and he shined his light in the van and asked to see Tommy's license. Tommy handed it to him and said, "Uhhhh, we really need to go!!", and pointed in the back seat. Of course, I was not looking my most ladylike at that moment! The trooper looked back there, THREW dh's license back at him, and yelled at the other cops to "LET THEM THROUGHT RIGHT NOW!!!!!" He said, "Turn on your flashers and get going! Forget the speed limit, but be careful!!" Naturally, we obliged.

We got to the birthing center at 1:30 a.m. My midwife met me at the door, took one look at me, and said to get on the bed in a hurry. I had group b strep this time around, so they had to give me my antibiotics before I could continue pushing. It was not very much fun--especially when the first time they tried to start my heplock in the back of my hand, my vein rolled and puffed up huge!! They got it started on the second try, thank goodness. I spent the next 15 minutes trying not to push while they gave me as much of my antibiotic as they could. After they got 1 1/2 doses in, the midwife said, "That's all we're gonna get--she's starting to crown!" At that point, I got nervous and silently prayed that everything would be alright since I didn't get all my medicine. I started pushing again and began to feel the head coming through. I do believe the Lord was watching out for me, because my beautiful baby girl was born in the caul, which helps protect from any exposure to the group b strep. Helena Winter Gray was officially born at 2:08 a.m.--exactly 1 hour and 53 minutes from my first contraction. She was my fourth angel, and my smallest even though she was a full term baby. She weighed 5 lbs. 13 oz. and was 19 1/4 inches long. She is nursing very well and is one of the calmest newborns I have ever seen. Helena is a wonderful blessing and a truly welcome addition to our family.

Congratulations!! I loved the part where you walloped your husband on the arm :LOL

I am so glad you made it to the birth center safely and that everything worked out with the Strep B and everything.
