crazy breastfeeding talk...

ick. went to a baby shower yesterday. I was the only one with a nursing baby present, and certainly the only one who was nursing an "older baby" (at ten months old!! )

anyway, the soon to be grandma was going on and on about how wonderful bf'ding was..we started talking more and she says "Well, I breastfed dd1 until she was 4 months. Then she got four teeth, and so I had to stop and just give her food." Wha?? she then says "are you planning to nurse to a year?" and i said "at least"...the look on her face was priceless. When are people going to get it?!

It's a shame isn't it. I know the information is out there on breastfeeding, but I guess if you don't seek it out or your not really interested in it, the formula companies and baby food companies message is clearly everywhere (tv magazines, etc, you name it) and there are to many moms out there that really do believe that at a certain time, ususally between 4-6 months that you have to start solids, introduce juice and formula. They just think of it as the natural progression, breastfeeding to formula.

We really need those breastfeeding campaigns out in full view of all this inaccurate advice being thrown at new moms.

How annoying and frustrating! I wish more people knew (or cared) about how important breastfeeding is.
