Can we talk about "mother rooms"? - Page 4

When my first two were little I didn't care for them much. But now that I have a babe that has never liked nursing if there's anything going on (and likes it even less the older she gets) and gets fussier and fussier but still refuses to eat...I get it. As long as it is clean it is a great thing, my distractable babe eats and my two older ones play (usually to the tune of "don't touch the diaper pail"). Most of the ones I've been to include activities for the older kids. The BRU one sucks (I am not a frequent customer but went once for a stroller my aunt has that I like) but the one at IKEA has the most comfortable nursing chair I've ever used, and as a bonus, has a little table and chairs and some toys for the older kids. It is in a very central location, too.

With the older ones I've nursed everywhere from the patio furniture in Wal-mart to in the bus to standing up in a crowded mall (no seats available). I have never been approached about it. And I'm glad the mother rooms are there because they're good for my newest, most distractable little one.

soccerchic, about BRU gliding chairs, I think it just depends on which BRU you go to. I have two near me (one just opened in November 2004). The old one in Harrisburg has all the chairs lined up facing the layette wall, but the new one in Lancaster has all the chairs spread out with little fake nurseries. (They both have mother rooms in the back of the store, though.)

soccerchic21, they did that at the BRU near us too, but they then put a booth up there and when they have events, they host presentations in that area. So you get to sit in the glider-rockers during presentations.

My dp has always gone in with me. When the girls were really little, I needed his help. We never had any problems with him being in there.

Our local Sears has a nursing room that is staffed by the regional public health office - there is a nurse and an LC in there every weekday afternoon. This is my favourite place of all - I can ask all my questions, I got alot of help in the beginning just by dropping in, and there are always other moms in there to connect with.
Can I just say WOW!!!

That is totally awsome! I wonder if that is just a Canadian thing or if it is a Sears thing? (I did read right that you are from Canada?)

More on the "mother's room" at Disneyland: I was there with a friend last summer. She was quite pregnant and nursing a 2 yo. I was nursing a younger toddler and had my 4 yo, too. Neither of our husbands were with us. I got really dehydrated, nursing and walking around in hot weather. We had NIP everywhere in the park, but thought a cooler place with comfy chairs might be good. The problem? Only the nursing mother and baby are allowed in the nursing area, so my 4 yo wasn't allowed to come sit with me. We expressed surprise and then while I worked on changing a diaper, my friend began to nurse her 2yo in the lobby. A worker came out and told her she could go inside. She said she was comfortable there and the woman basically said that other people might not be. My friend complained and we just left. We were pretty angry, but not that suprised.

It's clearly geared toward a different kind of mom and baby. There was a curtained off area for nursing, a separate area for feeding baby food to babies in high chairs, etc. Very scheduled and regimented. Sponsor? Carnation.

I've peeked in a few, and I must agree with the previous poster - they SMELL, well the ones I looked in on BRU and Seaworld, and heck who wants to sit in a smelly little room at Seaworld?
