Depends on what you want to sew...

Quilting- you may want to look into a rotary cutter, rotary cutting mat, rulers, good sissors, some patterns ( you can find alot of free ones on the web, or make your own)

Clothes - notions you may need, elastic, velcro, sissors

Toys- I dont' have much experience with toy sewing but I'm sure there are others that can help you.

The best suggestion I can give you is to go to JoAnns or Hancock Fabrics and look around. Make a list of those things you will need and those you will want, include the cost so that you can have an idea of when you can get then or a good list for your SO.

Good Luck

My list is (still waiting to buy a machine!)

Rotary cutter (for diapers)
seam ripper (I have one, but you always need one!)
sturdy scissors
Pins/pincushion
Pinking shears (for wool pants, no serger)
tracing paper (for patterns)
Interfacing (I used to love making patterns with this stuff, so I may end up doing that too)

uhm..thats all I could think of

I'd recommend getting one of those attachment things that you can put big spools of thread on...it's WAY cheaper to buy thread if you buy it bigger...and with that attachment thing (I have no idea what it is called) you can put two on at once...not like it matters but I think they are cool =)

as far as patterns i think it is walmart or joanns, has patterns called patterns for the sewing dummy or something like that, and easy patterns too, pretty cheap....try with one of those first..!!! i started with pillows and easy valance curtains when i first started sewing...try that!!
