i'd love to get a serger. i had an idea in my head that i'd love a basic elna serger because i love my elna sewing machine. but the price (on sale too) of the most basic serger is over $1500 CDN!!! wow. i had no idea. what brands are the most reliable and which do you recommend? i have no serger experience.

I think BabyLock sergers are the best. I mostly like their top of the line, which cost probably about as much as the Elna, but their lower lines are pretty good, too. I also really like their old machines, which you can find on Ebay for good prices

You should know that most mid- to low priced machines tend to all be made by the same few factories, so it can just come down to what dealer gives you the best service.

I need to know this too!
SIL apparently was telling MIL that industrial sergers(which she has) are the only way to go and all else is crap-so I want to find a decent one and prove them both wrong:LOL We can't all have industrial sergers now can we? There has to be a good one somewhere!!!!!

I had an elna serger and hated it. It was impossible to turn corners on and there was no way to adjust the presser foot pressure on it. I replaced it with a Pfaff and absolutely love it. I tried every brand of serger out there, and NONE could handle what my little Pfaff does

I have a solid old Juki that is great - they mostly make industrial sergers, so you kinda get the industrial quality at a home-sewing price.

Walmart Singer Serger? Any experience?

I'm wondering about this too. I have no serger experience (and very little sewing experience with a 100 dollar walmart brother machine), but I am planning to make a bunch of diapers. (Yes, I'm crazy!)

Anyway, my sister-in-law has a serger that she will let me borrow--not sure what kind, she said it was around $400 though. The only thing is, she lives a few hours away from me so it will be kind of difficult to borrow it every time I want to make a new batch of dipes.

So, I saw a Singer serger at Walmart for under $200. See: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=2276639

Wondering if anyone's had any experience with this particular machine? I've read that a lot of people believe the cheap ones are worthless... And I don't want to have so many problems that II'm turned off to serging all together.

Please bear in mind that diapers will be MUCH harder on a serger than most other things one would sew...how often do you go through 8 layers of flannel or hemp on a normal project? I sincerely doubt a $200 Walmart machine will hold up to that.

You really do get what you pay for, and you would be much better off spending your $200 on a used serger.

For a good price the Walmart Brother 924D is an excellent serger, I loved mine until it fell from my dining room table and was ruined. That thing was a work horse.

The walmart singer machine (serger) is NOT a good machine, at least I haven't heard good things about it.

Mamax, that is good news for me. How much is the brother one? I didn't see that one at my walmart, but there's another walmart close that might have it.

Serger

I LOVE my Bernina She is a workhorse!! I have a 5 thread which is a huge timesaver as well. Please consider supporting your local independent sewing shop - chances are you can buy a better grade refurbished used model that will work better than a cheapie lower end big box store serger. Just my two cents!!
