Should we go get chicken pox today?

I need some advice. We just found out this morning that a little girl we know has chicken pox. She is still (but not for long) contagious. I'm thinking this may be one of few (if not the only) opportunity we will have to expose dd to the virus.

But--we have been TTC and there is a chance I may be pregnant. I won't know for probably a week. The incubation for cp is 2 weeks, right? What are the concerns about exposure of a fetus to cp? Is it a concern this early (if I even am pg)? Any thought or opinions? Thanks.

THank you for the replies. Yes, I had chicken pox as a child & so did dh, so we decided to go get some exposure. Dd had a playdate with her little friend. So we'll keep our fingers crossed. Thanks again!

Is the outbreak still active?

Just wondering if the infection was still happening in your area? schools etc?
I live in NH and would seriously consider making the trip with my 2 dd who have not been vaccinated and have not yet had the cp. I am quite intent on them acquiring a natural immunity to cp, but have not been able to expose them.

Well, what happened was the child's father had shingles, a very minor case (he didn't even realize it!). That's how she got the cp. I haven't heard of others in the area who've gotten it recently.

It's been just about 2 wks since dd was exposed to her. She's now sick, with thick, runny nose, cough, & slight fever. But no sign of pox yet. I don't know if this sickness is the beginning of it or just something unrelated.

Thanks for the link, Gitta. The little girl I saw looked very much like that. Does it usually begin on the trunk or can it be anywhere?
