I seldom post in this forum, but wanted to share my poem. I haven't written since my second was tiny, and now my third is a year old, and I was struck by inspiration; it's in first-draft format, so be kind
.
Emerging: Isaac's Birth
It was still in the hour before dawn
But for the rippling of water
around my shoulders
the chanting from the radio
pulsing, throbbing, "Returning, "
had become quiet
but I did not notice.
The urgent pressing
of my womb
dimmed the Christmas lights
in the wondow, quieted
the high, thin vibrations
of clary sage oil
I filled my lungs
as I felt you press
toward the warm water
I filled my lungs
and touched the softness
of your wet curls
Filled my lungs
and stroked your cheek
as you paused.
I filled my lungs,
pressing you further
and your father worried
til I stood
to raise your head
above the water
a tiny gasp between my thighs
You filled your lungs
before finally
emerging.
