Especially for "big girls"

Are there any online links about learning to sew preferably for dork newbies like me

I don't know about online links, but you can find used sewing books all over the place at garage sales and in thrift stores.

I personally have bought two Vogue sewing books and one by Reader's Digest and never paid more than a dollar for a book.

I find the Singer Sewing Reference Library brand books to be really good, esp. their serger book. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/se...ibrary&x=0&y=0

They are chock full of bright, closeup color pictures, and easy to understand. I got my serger one at a yard sale but it would be WELL worth $20 new.

I also recommend looking for patterns designed for kids. I started sewing at 5 so I went through all the learning part when I was too young to care about quality and such. I think if you can accept that it's going to be like being a kid for a while, and not taking on anything too big, you'll be a much happier sewer

Yeah, me, too.

I put a few books on reserve at my local library, waiting for them to show up. One is called "Sew Fast Sew Easy," and the other is the DK "Complete Book of Sewing."

Are there specific titles in the Singer reference library?

Also to the OP, do you have a sewing machine already? And do you know how to use one?

Something that has helped me to improve my skills is reading Sew News and Threads magazines, also Sewing with Nancy is a PBS tv show, and look for sewing how-to videos from the library. Actually seeing somebody do it, rather than just reading helps a lot. Have fun, soon your to-sew list will be a mile long!
