I scheduled my first midwife visit!

Anyone else? The woman scheduling it was surprised I was calling so early. :LOL She also wouldn't really listen to me about what I think my due date actually is (Dec 3) and wrote me down as Nov 27.

So, there's only one homebirth midwife group here, and that's who I'll be seeing. I also have heard great things about a cnm pair here for hospital births. With the hb midwife, group, they have you see an ob for backup care. DH still isn't convinced about the homebirth route, so we might end up doing the hospital midwife route instead. Should I make appointments with the backup ob and cnm group both? How many groups to folks interview before picking?

How much should I be irked about the point that the midwife group (I wasn't talking to one of the midwives, by the way...) didn't want to hear about my o date, and only my lmp date?

I made my appointment today as well. I got a similar reaction from the receptionist... "You're last period was when??"

Yay! Oh, Wendy! That's wonderful! Is your DH going with you? Have him write down all his concerns ahead of time. Tell him to ask away during the initial visit. That's the best time to cover the what ifs. It will probably really put him at ease. I know it put my DH at ease. He would have never chosen homebirths intially. It was so wise of my MW to tell him right off the bat, wherever the woman says she wants to give birth... believe her.

That's really buggy. Hmmm. Well, if you think they're all going to be like that, I'm not real familiar with Ohio's rules. You may want to adjust your LMP to match your ovulation so that you're not pulled for going overdue or have to do stress tests and such. It's much easier to do that now than down the road. At the same time... I'd expect that from other practices, but not a MW. Good point about it being the receptionist, not one of the MWs.

I called my midwife like 30 minutes after I pee'd on the stick. I was on medicine that I felt I needed to get off of but needed advice on it to be sure. She said most people don't call for awhile :LOL I think that's why she scheduled my first appointment so early.

Good suggestion, thanks. I'll have him do that. It's not really his style, but I'll see if I can push him to do that.

Hmmm, good point about Ohio laws. I already told them my LMP, though, and started to explain about a later O date, but got brushed off. Again, this isn't the midwife, but the LMP date is already "on record." Geez, we didn't have any sex for the first 16 days of my cycle (horrible flu), so a day 14 conception of obviously not right.

However, I'm not certain of my O date. As I said, I had the flu for 2 weeks and didn't bother temping to confirm that I had a temp of 100 degrees! Anyways, I had a short, but reasonably typical cm pattern peaking at day 14, then we had an ooops on day 16 and I shrugged it off since I figured I'd Od. Then on day 17 I started up with a more typical cm patten, peaking at day 21. I had resumed temping on day 16 and got pretty high temps (>97.8), but I was still a tad sick. Then I got 97.1 on day 20, rising to >98 on day 21. With the exception of a 97.5 on day 23, every other temperature was between 98.4 and 98.6. I quit temping on day 35 and tested instead, getting a faint but undeniable positive.

Sooooo, O date was CD21, right?

Congrats again Wendy!! I would just say you made a mistake and ask that they updated the chart. Tell them you called from work or something. Chances are they won't remember the whole conversation!

Argh, but this is a problem with striking a balance between getting the information right (as in: Due date of Dec 3) and getting the information complete (as in: due date of Nov 26-Dec 3). I want to be completely honest with my care givers, but I also want my baby to come when he or she is good an ready! (Hopefully after mineralogy is over, LOL)

Hey, Wendy! I think you just found that you wrote in your journal that you started your LMP later than you told the nurse. Funny, must be pregnancy brain already! Yes, you definitely O'd later for sure. You 100% know. Maybe during the interview... they'll ask you LMP again or give you paperwork perhaps? Or you can ir blank and then ask the actual MW if she's prefer your LMP or your more curate O day using FAM. If she says she wants O date you cpuld give her the "new" one? I think you need to give yourself all the time you can.

Was Karen early or late?

Karen was born at 38 weeks 5 days. That was 1 day after a HUGE thunderstorm and 2 days after we threw a party. Big things always happen for us after we throw a party. That's also how we finally sold our house.

I don't think that Karen was quite ready to come out yet, but she came because my water broke and I had evidently been dialated to about 4 cm for at least a week. At least, that's how the mw interpretted the 4cm-wide lump on the side of her head.

No one in the P or S families has had a baby before their due date except for me. My mom delivered my sister and myself both 10-12 days late, by sis delivered her two 10 days late, and my SIL was induced 10 days late (c/s), induced 5 days late (c/s after uterine rupture) and had a scheduled c/s 1 day early.

I like the "do you want the LMP date or my ovulation date?" approach better, at least for the lay midwives. I'll probably shift the LMP for the backup OB.

I talked to DH for a long time last night about his concerns about homebirth. He pretty much said that his only concern was the safety of me and the baby and if I feel safer here, then that's where the baby will be born. He also agreed that his family really doesn't need to know where this baby will be born.

I think your LMP/O timing sounds like a good plan. I know my lay-midwife took my O dates rrather than LMP. Although I never had a period between Jude & Cicely!

I called my OB to schedule my first visit yesterday. However, I had an annual exam scheduled for next week, so I wanted to cancel it and give them time to reschedule someone else, since it was at a hard-to-get time.

I've been thinking about going to see a birth center close to here. However, I can't get anyone who really knows that much about it - it seems that the "hospital" type people (yes, I'm making broad generalizations here, forgive me) think that the m/w is too crunchy, and the "crunchy" people think she's a bit too much of a med-wife. Well, I'm a bit in the middle, too, so maybe it would be a good place for me? I don't feel 100% comfortable with the idea of ME birthing at home, so I think if the birth center doesn't work out I will go back to my hospital. I honestly had a decent experience there the last time, and had there not been the complications with my b/p and spilling proteins, I think I would've been able to birth very naturally there. I will certainly hire my doula again!

KofDuke it sounds like your in between birth center is in betwen like you! That sounds like a good match, if you like her after the interveiw. And, your other experience sounds like a good option,too.

Patti! Woo-hoo! What fun! I interviewed 3 midwives and then BAM I talked to one on the phone and was just like... THIS IS THE ONE! Sure enough I liked her best. I birthed my two children with her in attendence.

This time, I'm exploring my options. Insurance covered Nurse-Midwives and all the homebirth options.

my call wasn't as fruitful. i called our local birth center and they weren't very warm or fuzzy. i am going to a general informational session on 4/14 but that's it so far.

maybe it'll get better once i see them in person.

Oh I could barely wait a minute before calling my midwife. We've stayed pretty close since my homebirth with Jake. The day after I talked to her she left for Italy for vacation for a couple weeks so my appointment isn't until the 25th. I can't wait! I'll be about 8 weeks then.
