How to stop ribbon from unraveling?

My dd has some clothes that are decorated with ribbons. They are very pretty, but every time I wash the clothing, it unravels farther and soon there won't be anything left! I know there is a way to stop the raveling. Some ribbon I have seen looks like it has glue applied to the end, others look as if they ends were cut with heat to melt the (synthetic) threads together. Has anyone done this before? Any tips for me? I don't want to just experiment because these are some nice articles of clothing and I don't want to ruin them.

THANKS!

Pinking shears? They at least slow it down.

I usually just hold a match near until it starts to melt.

Fray Check works well. Heat sealing is difficult without the right equipment... you can't just hold the end up to a lighter the way you can with nylon rope. You also can't heat seal natural fibers because they don't melt. I'd go with the Fray Check.

I ended up just holding a match to the ends of the ribbon. I was afraid if I did that that I would end up with brown-edged ribbons, in an unattractive melted shape, but they came out pretty nice. One ribbon's end did darken slightly, though, so I will probably get the Fray Check for things like this in the future. I have a serger in the mail, so it should be handy for more than one use.

THANKS!

I usually just cut it on a angle or sometimes I cut it with a V taken out (so both corners are pointed) I hope this makes sense.
