Need ideas on making butterfly wings.

DD is going to be a ladybug for Haloween. Dh had the idea that he could be a bee and I could be a butterfly. I'm thinking the ladybug and bee will be easy 1 nap projects. The butterfly on the other hand seems a bit complex. I wonder about the wings and what would be the best way to make them and how will I get through the door?

i know some of the pattern companies have wings in their costume patterns

i try to hit the 99cent sale at ajoanns and get them taht way

what i've seen a lot of is to have a wire (like coat hanger) shaped and then nylon pantyhose put on over it. usually its airbrushed, but i bet something else could be done

Why don't you just make them out of fabric. You would probably need something stiff down the middle and have it attached to your back in a few places (a tie around your waist?) and then the tips of the wings attached at your wrists.

My daughter has a pair that I paid a fortune for, and looking at them I think a couple coat hangers, a pair of nylons and a can of spray paint would do the trick.

Khrisday, do you think you might want to sell them? I finished the ladybug costume which is the most important. If I get dh's bee costume done soon I might be able to figure out the nylons and paint thing, but if you are finished with yours and want to see some of that $$ come back we could talk.

I was a butterfly and I just used a square piece of I think mesh fabric tied to a ring at each end and velcroed to the neck of my shirt. So although it only fell from my arms it did move with my hands.

sorry Lisa, they are part of dd's dress up trunk and worn on a regular basis (they are also getting a little ratty LOL) Have you tried the costume sections of stores liek Target, etc? I have seen some there and I think they were fairly cheap.

Khrisday, I was pseudo-kidding. I really want to make them, I'm just having a hard time picturing in my head how to do it. As soon as I can see it, I can do it. Right now I'm having a hard time picturing how to do the wire. Hangers might work, but where to poke the ends... Hmmm...

On Martha Stewart's website there are instructions for making wings from crepe paper and floral wire, and some very cute hats to go along with them. Go to www.marthastewart.com and the "learn" section. Look under halloween.
