Incompitent nurses???

Somehow i do believe that the nurses i saw today are incompitent.

Let me start by saying that i went to the ER because i was (still am) in pain. It is a kind of general abdominal pain but mostly on one side. They put me in an evaluation room. Hook up the monitors and start asking questions. I tell them that we just moved here and i do not have a local doctor and i have been useing a midwife in TN. One of the nurses gets all freaked out. Asking what kind of drugs i am on and if i have had any prenatal care. It was infuriating to say the least. After i had finally convinced her that i did indeed have prenatal care equal to or better than any OB could give me and that i was NOT on drugs they decided to do a pelvic exam. The younger nurse did it and then turned to the older nurse (the one who was freaky) and whispered to her. That kinda pissed me off because WHY keep secret something about MY body? Anyway...the older nurse immediately grabbed gloves and lubed up. She checked me VERY undelicately and pronounced me to be 4cm dialated on the outside and 2cm dialated inside. She asked me 3 times if i thought my water had broke yet. Of course not you dolt!!! I am in pain....never said my freekin water broke. Then they cath me to get a urine specimine. ouchy!!!

They leave the room and tell me they are just going to monitor the baby for a while. Fine with me. Heartbeat fluxuated from 120-160+ every 2 minutes or so like a cycle. I had to hold the monitor on my belly because the baby kept moving and they weren't getting their tracing like they wanted.

After 45 minutes the older nurse comes back in with a pill and a little thing of liquid meds. I ask what that is. She sayes it is a GI coctail and the pill is for indigestion. UMMMM....ok. I had already told them that i was NOT constipated at all.....quiet the opposite, didn't have gas nor had i eaten anything yet today. (it always takes me a few hours after i get up to have an appetite so it wasn't unusual that i had nothing to eat yet since i had only been out of bed for about 2 hours)

So i take their coctail and pill and go get my paperwork. She has on there that Dr X will see me next week (if i want to see him) and that i need to cut out spicy foods...i NEVER EVER eat spicy foods ever because my stomach simply can't handle it anytime, i need to NOT DRINK AS MUCH and not drink during meals. It also has circled on there pre-term labor.

I had PAIN....not indigestion, not heartburn and no contractions. Started having contractions after the seconds nurses rough exam though and have been having them since then. They have been slacking off though so i am not too worried. I am STILL in pain though and to add to it i now have the runs and my bowels are gurgleing like crazy (tmi i know).

Could it be something totally not related to pregnancy? Like the flu or a digestive bug? Have you spoken to your midwife?

That is so sad how mean those ladies where to you. I hate when nurses and doctors don't listen to you, and treat you like an idiot.

Offer you some LadyWulf.
I am a nurse and I wanted to tell you that they could have quite possibly been idiots. Just because they are medical professional doesn't mean that they are any good at what they do.
When I was in nursing school about 10% of the students I would be afraid to have as my nurse.

The other night I had pain in my upper abdomen I got really freaked out and thought I was having contractions only they didn't come and go it was just constant I drank a bunch of water had something to eat and lied down the pain went away after about an hour and hasn't come back. If you are still having the pain I would call your midwife and talk to her.
That was kind of weird for the nurses to give you laxatives if your diagnosis was preterm labor, hope you feel better.

I am wondering why they didn't call a doctor to come and see you and evaluate your pain. And if you are really 4 cm already and really in "preterm labor", why was more not done for you and why would they be having you wait another week to see anyone about it?

Can you see your midwife soon or call her?

Hope you feel better tonight and sorry you had such a bad experience.

Actually, 4cms externally means nothing, they only go by internal dilation. The only thing I can say in the nurses defense is that the hospital accrediting organization (JACHO or however it is spelled) has said that hospitals HAVE to screen all pts. for drug use. It is a routine question everywhere I have worked and probably had nothing to do with your midwife. All that being said, I can't believe that you weren't evaluated by a physician. Forget what kind of nurses are these, what kind of HOSPITAL is this? Personally, I'd run.
