Favorite wooden toys?

Thread Starter
I'm looking for some quality toys (i.e. not plastic!) for my 9 mo ds - things that would be appropriate for his current age & things that he could grow into. Anyone have any suggestions re toys, websites, etc.? I guess technically the toys don't have to be wooden, just not plastic & mass-produced/mass-marketed.

TIA,

Jaye

We really like the stacking rainbow. When the child gets older, they can be used as tunnels for vehicles.

I"m building up quite a collection of websites that I want to order from when the kids get here.

Here are some of them:

"melissa and doug" has a huge selection of wooden toys for young children and babies. you have to find a retailer, you can't go straight through the company. i actually sell them, but this is not me trying advertise, you can actually find them in many toy stores and on ebay. but if you are interested, let me know.

My 1 year old loves his Melissa and Doug stacking rainbow toy. He has a plastic version of the stacking rings and of couse he prefers the wooden Melissa and Doug toy.

are there good toys available for 5/6 year olds?

www.toymobile.com has some nice waldorf-style wooden toys, especially the ostheimer wooden figures and animals and the wooden play food (some are way too small for babies though). Our favorite website is probably nova natural toys.

ETA- www.playstoretoys.com also is a good site.

Wooden Blocks!

My kids, now almost 2 and 4, play with their wooden blocks everyday! Simple and great for all ages.

We keep them in the livingroom and they are never rotated out like many other toys are.

A wooden marble run has always been a great hit with my kids. The 8- and 11-year-old still enjoy it.

For small children, under 1 year, I recommend a soft doll (I know it's not wooden!), you can easily make one yourself with a bit of wool, some string and a piece of silk or cotton, just gather and bunch the wool into a sphere in the cetner of the fabric, smooth over the head, and tie around the neck. You can tie some knots for hands. Even my nieces and nephews like our silk 'baby' like this that I made myself (although at first they thought it odd as it was so very simple). I agree with the suggestion for wooden cars, I think all children (adults too!) really enjoy toys that roll! For larger toys, our daughter really enjoyed her toddler sized rocking horse from just before she turned one, and still does. Her cousin Jared can still fit on it if he squeezes, and he loves it too. Rocking is so therapeutic for children and helps them work out extra energy - they always have lots of that!

For 5 - 6 year olds rolling toys are great as well. Our nephew Jared LOVES his wooden grader and tractor. Our daughter Kaelynn, 2, loves her helicopter.

After reading this thread I've decided we definitely need a marble run! Any shopping sources for one, or are they relatively easy to find locally?

The Playcottage is so pricey though! We love Nova Toys, too! M&D are made in China, and generally low quality... but they are cheap, and good if you can't find anything else My 20mo LOVES his wooden lawnmower. My nearly 5yo loves his tree blocks (free if you make them yourself, except for the $2 for linseed oil!) and almost all his wooden figures (barn, animals, knights, dragon, etc.).

I have been very disappointed with the quality of Melissa and Doug. Maybe my son just plays to rough, but all of our toys made by them are broken. I second the opinions on Selecta and Haba. They can withstand anything and are so educational. I love the home education section at www.littleants.com. Maybe they sell them other places too.

As littleflower said, I too am disappointed with the quality of Melissa and Doug toys. The puzzle faces began to peel (???) and the wooden train broke within 2 days of owning it. We fixed the train with wood glue, but I don't think I should have to fix anything- it should be made well enough in the first place!

On the other hand, the train is still, by far, one of my fave toys for my babes.

Anyone know of companies in Canada or ones with low shipping to Canada? I'd really like wooden ride-on toy.

I would just send emails to some of the business here. I know a bunch of them drop ship so the price might not be too steep.
