Pam and Abigail,

How about Playful Pixie in AB? I am in love with this:

I really like Maukilo.com They have great european wood/fabric toys. I have liked everything I bought from them, especially toys by HABA, SELECTA, CHELONA.

Check out local artisans at art fairs and flea markets. I know here at the art festivals you can find a fellow who makes wooden toys, last time there was a stall with adorable felt puppets, etc., one with cloth books, etc. These things aren't mass produced and are locally crafted usually, so you're supporting local business people rather than a big company and not paying for the long-distance shipping and all the packaging and fuel that entails.

Have you checked out BC Playthings or Mastermind Toys ? They both have wooden toys and ride on's.

Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions! I'm glad I held off buying anything until I saw the posts about Melissa and Doug - I was considering some of their products - but IMHO if something is made of wood, it should last! I agree w/the idea of buying locally at arts festivals. Unfortunately I live in a fairly small city, and we have only 1 arts festival a year (vs. the several/year in my hometown, lovely Cols, OH). But that's only a few months off, guess I can wait a while.

Thanks, Miranda. Can you also suggest the best place to get it? And do you have any other suggestions for natural playthings for a 6 yr old?
Thanks a lot.
Deepa.
