What could this be?

DS is almost 8 months old, and regularly goes to sleep by nursing. He also usually sleeps half the night through and then is on and off the boob for the rest of the night while sleeping. However, the past couple nights he's acted very strange. I lay in the bed nursing him to sleep, he's all fine and sleepy and about to roll over for bed when he kind of wakes up and starts crying, going for boob, half latching on, letting go, crying some more in a frustrated tone... It took me three hours tonight to get him down because he just worked himself up so much that he was wide awake several times. He did this during naps today as well and never actually got more than ten minutes in. Could there be something wrong with my milk? Could he be working on some sort of nursing strike? He is fine about bfing at certain times though, it seems like it is only the going to sleep nursing sessions that this happens. Plus last night from about 3 am he was awake for a couple hours, he was popping on and off the boob, playing with my nipples, just in general being very restless. I'm not used to this behavior, we usually cosleep wonderfully unless he's teething (and I don't see anything new trying to come through so I dont think that's it). Do any of you have any experience dealing with this? I feel horrible like my milk is not making him happy all of the sudden.

Hey -- sounds like Bleuet when he's teething or about to be sick, like a cold. How is he during the day? Any fever? It's definitely not your milk, so don't worry about that.

I feel the same way when it happens -- usually co-sleeping is so trouble-free, I'm dumsquizzled when he does anything but snooze (and somehow manage to take up most of the bed).

My DS did the exact same thing for a few nights around that age. I think it turned out to be teething, and he got over it pretty fast.

It must be the age becasue my DS is almost 8 months also and the last two nights he has done this. Growth Spurt, Teeth something is going on but I am looking forward to the end.

Did you figure out what was wrong? Andrew did this once and I thought I was going crazy, he would be fine during the day but then restless, on and off the boob, crying, etc all night long. Turned out to be an ear infection. The pain gets worse when they lie down. After the first one, I could tell immediately when he was getting one, but that first one, I really thought I was going nuts!

Wow! Eight months seems to be the magic number. I have three boys, youngest 15 months, and they all did this somewhere between 7-9 months old. Never really got a definitive reason why. Maybe it is just some type of developmental thing. It took about 1-2 weeks to pass with each of them. Hang in there. It will get better, and it is definately not your milk! Good luck!
